I realize the daily chit-chat thread is supposed to be to discuss any part of daily conversation but I feel it's become a bit too serious and too much political discussion lately (which by the way is totally my fault lol), so I figured I'd instead start a thread for posters here to wherever they want to discuss something about politics- be it the current primaries going across the country, the current Supreme Court nominee hearings etc... can discuss it here instead.
I don't like to get too worked up over politics so I may not post too often here, but wanted an outlet for any time a poster wanted to vent.
Also, it seems for the most part it seems the most frequent posters here are more on the liberal side, but if someone joins or has joined and has different political views than others, I ask that we please find ways to disagree with arguments while not getting personal and still respecting our different views. (It's fine to disagree with the subtext, but don't get personal).
This way we can make to more somewhat lighthearted and/or more "normal" conversation in daily chit-chat.

I will I guess just to get it start- begrudgingly discuss politics as tomorrow is the Democratic primary for New York Governor. (There's other races but this is the big one) New York is a blue state and whoever wins it is pretty much guaranteed to either get re-elected (Andrew Cuomo) or elected (former Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, also vying for the Democratic nomination). There's technically a Republican primary as well, but no one expects the winner there to win New York.
(Edit: Shows what I know as Republicans already chose their nominee for Governor in May lol).
Cuomo has been well-ahead in the polls, but Nixon seems to have bothered him and forced him further to the left on some key issues.
Anyway, I'm not a registered Democrat or Republican (I obviously lean liberal and admittedly usually vote Democratic, but have some fundamental disagreements to actually join the party), so I can't vote. But I will say I would begrudgingly vote for Cuomo, since although he drives me nuts at times (sometimes he seems like a stubborn Democrat in name only, other times he'll pass a law or do something else I like), Nixon might have good ideas but I find completely unqualified to run for Governor. (I don't consider being a supporting actress on a 2000's cable show a qualification, and feel she should have run for something like congress instead before going straight for Governor).
But yeah that's it for now.
I don't plan on adding anything for the near future but wanted to make this thread for anyone who wanted to discuss politics.

Brett Kavanaugh might be replacing the centrist Ted Kennedy as opposed to the progressive Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, but the situation is just as grave for women, non-whites, LGBTs, and the working class, as Kavanaugh is described as almost as far to the right as Clarence Thomas. He's also relatively young, which would give him sway over our law for most of the century.
Meanwhile, it would be a challenge for me to get along with someone who takes inspiration for their policy platform from John Hagee, Bryan Fischer, Tony Perkins, or other extreme fundamentalists.

You don't necessarily have to "get along" with another poster, just be able to disagree without calling them a jerk. This is a moot point at this moment anyway since most of us are on the same wavelength right now anyway.

I love getting along with people lol, but personally if I was in New York, I would vote for Cynthia Nixon since she does have some great ideas, and it’s good to have some of her ideas in a governor and yes Scumhunter, i respect your decision to vote for Cuomo 😊and the important thing is feeling happy after our vote regardless and being part of the electoral process.

Pretty wild with the Kavanaugh hearings this week. The thing is- at least two women so far have come forward with sexual harassment/assault allegations and put their name to the charges. They are risking their reputation to do this. Most women do not come forward like this, and Christine Blasey Ford is a well-respected college professor. If she looks at all credible on Thursday, if she testifies on Thursday, then Senators, especially any Senators who are female even if they're Republican female Senators are going to have a hard time confirming him.
I am concerned that Kavanaugh would be a vote to overturn Roe v. Wade and other civil rights gains we've had in the past few years. (I don't like abortion, but I also don't like teenage or young girls who get raped have to go to some quack doctor with a wire hanger like in the 1960's). So I'd be relieved if he's not confirmed, but very saddened that it took women who were possibly sexually assaulted for it to be happen. (I would have rather had women not potentially assaulted and he be confirmed- as painful and concerning as that outcome may be- then to see women who may have been allegedly hurt by him and him not confirmed instead).

P.S. Also loved Trump's "why didn't she call the FBI 36 years ago?" What 16-year-old girl even really knows what the FBI is? (Fashion Bureau Institute lol).

P.S. to forum reader Machete,
I am glad you still read the forum but I'm done talking to you as a person as besides what I thought was a brief showing of humanity you have gone back to insulting me in your messages.
I will never correspond with you again after this message or acknowledge or reply to you even though I will always appreciate your contributions. I will no longer reply to any of your messages. Most people would agree I was actually incredibly patient and tolerant with you if they actually read your messages. I have tried very hard to be respectful to you because of how much you like this forum and how you also helped this forum, but respect is a two-way street, which you have not given me simply because of politics.
(And this is exactly why Donald Trump has been such a disaster for America as President- there is no longer respectful discourse or disagreement- simply one side of the other- the worst thing he has done is divide this country).
It also sickens to me that someone who was supposedly a fan of America's Most Wanted would disbelieve and bash women who may be victims so easily, just because it doesn't fit your side of the narrative.
Have fun continuing to be brainwashed by Fox News while my brain that went to college and knows how to read, write, and spell continues to function.
Instead of politics, when I think of Machete I will remember the decent times I had with you (forum contributions, discussing sports etc...) instead of being bitter. You are still more than welcome to read and enjoy the forum.
Goodbye, Machete

Dr. Ford's testimony was, as expected, riveting, emotional and believable. It was hard for me to not break down feeling sorry for her.
We will see what happens tomorrow. Part of me feels like there can be a video of Brett Kavanaugh actually trying to attack her, or secret audio recording somewhere- and it wouldn't matter, most Senate Republicans would still vote for Kavanaugh because they want to get in their guy to overturn Roe V. Wade (it doesn't matter who the guy or girl is, as long as they're a conservative on the bench, regardless of who they are as a person or what they're accused of). The other part of me has some hope to be cautiously optimistic that perhaps they will realize the optics to millions of female voters across the country if they go ahead and confirm Kavanaugh.
If Kavanaugh does get confirmed tomorrow, they have ensured that they inspired those millions of women, many of whom are independent or even possibly registered Republicans, to vote blue in November.

Just as I predicted, the Republican party doesn't give a sh** about women and confirmed Kavanaugh. (I had slight cautious optimism perhaps Collins and Murkowski would vote against Kavanaugh, but only Murkowski deflected while Collins has all but assured she will be voted out by angry constituents in the state of Maine). And now MAGA trolls come out of the woodwork every time they score a "victory", and are the sorest "winners" ever, bragging on various Facebook posts news sites etc... but the thing is there was slight hope for cautious optimism but Kavanaugh's confirmation was pretty much already sealed since two years ago, when Mitch McConnell played dirty politics in refusing to even have a hearing when Obama nominated Merrick Garland, claiming that it wasn't appropriate during "an election year." This was total bs. McConnell realized that if he delayed and took a chance a Republican got elected in the Presidential race, it would mean a different and more conservative would replace the late Antolin Scalia instead, thus increasing the chances of one day overturning Roe v. Wade. Other issues as well, but Roe v. Wade being the main issue. Unfortunately, McConnell's dirty trick paid off once Trump was elected, leading to the conservative Gorsuch and now Kavanaugh's appointments (Republicans have always been better than Democrats when it comes to playing dirty. Sometimes unfortunately you need to sink to the other's level.) The fact of the matter is Republicans had control of the Senate in 2016 and now in 2018. You don't get to brag that you "won" when you already had more votes than the other side. It's like a basketball game where one team has 12 players and the other team has 3 and the team with 12 players brags when they beat them. A few criticisms of Democrats: -While Kavanaugh is entitled to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, the investigation called for by Jeff Flake was a sham. However, it is not the FBI's fault it was a sham as they were limited in what they could investigate by the White House and only had a few days. You cannot solve a case in 3 days. Up until this point, most of us sane people who realize the danger Trump represents to our country had been rooting for the FBI when it came to the Russia probe, Trump's business dealings (oh and we conveniently forgot about the New York Times expose about decades of alleged tax fraud all of a sudden) etc... You can't root for the FBI one day and then all of a sudden decide they're evil when just one instance doesn't go your way. Perhaps if they had been allowed to properly investigate, things would have been different. (Or Republican Senators would have still swept the report under the rug, but who knows). -Liberals need to take it easy on Joe Manchin, who is a Democrat in heavily red West Virginia and is running for re-election. He stated he would be the 51st vote but not the 50th. If Collins had joined Murkowski in rejecting Kavanaugh, then Manchin would have also voted no, since a "yes" would have resulted in a tie and in a tie-breaker, the Vice President casts the deciding vote. Manchin was not going to let himself be the reason Kavanaugh got confirmed. Once it became clear that Kavanaugh was going to get confirmed anyway, Manchin had to vote yes as to not upset the conservative voters in West Virginia. Politically convenient yes, but it was a smart maneuver towards his re-election and helping Democrats in trying to regain control of the Senate. So now all I can do is say vote vote vote this November, as usually this is overdramatic but this time democracy is literally at stake. I'm all politicked out for now and need a breather. So unless one of my fellow posters like 912th or toptenhunter who also like to discuss politics want to reply to me, I will not be posting my own thoughts until election day. (We'll see how long that can last lol). In other words, if I have anything to add your reply I will. Otherwise, I will just like your post if I feel it stands out on it's own and will wait until election day to add anything else. Ok well just to settle things down a bit, here's a picture of Trump with toilet paper stuck to his shoe (very symbolic! Loll)

Rolling back Roe v Wade would almost double the birth rate, at the cost of doubling infant mortality and cutting general neonatal health in half, and if not the birth rate, it would double the back-alley abortion rate. If they wanted to specifically raise the birth rate, what could they do besides planting tracking devices in every woman's reproductive system once the government (probably sectarian inquisitors) knows she's pregnant and confining her to a birthing center or delivery room once the device tells the bureaucrats in question she's going into labor? America would see the true dark side of authoritarian fertilism either way.

I really hope that like the Republicans and the Tea Party, the Democrats along with the Bernie Wing/Justice Democrats will take over in November to just give them a taste of their own medicine, the Republicans played dirty politics, and I really want the Democrats to play dirty politics so that ridiculous excuse for a president no longer feels empowered to do anything stupid.

As a resident north of the US border here in Canada, I don't comment much in this politics thread, but I wanted to address something that happened today.
There has been a shooting rampage at a Jewish synagogue in Pennsylvania where we have between four to eight people at least dead and multiple other shooting victims. The info that's come in is that the gunman is in custody but was making anti-Jewish statements during the incident which generally matches right-wing extremism.
Trump's response, "the synagogue should have had an armed guard".
I'll make this point, and I am definitely not accusing a majority of US Republicans of being in this segment as I imagine a lot of readers from both sides of the US Political System read this forum. But I feel this should be indirectly blamed on "The Orange Guy, AKA Trump", since he has done absolutely nothing to address right-wing extremism as POTUS. I feel he will never do so as to not alienate a certain segment of his supporters that he needs for the 2020 election coming up in two years.
While Trump has done nothing to address right-wing extremism, he instead focuses fear on the caravan of migrants from Central America that are currently in Southern Mexico. As a leader of a political segment, you have the obligation of addressing the extremist views of your party if they are a threat to public safety and civil order.
Ironically (in an unfortunate sense), there was a CNN opinion piece done yesterday about the serial package bombings related to the "caravan that's already in the US" which may require an update depending on the circumstances of today's shooting rampage.

I don’t know if we brought up the disappearance and murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khassoggi on here and I want to know what everyone thinks. Also I put it in the politics section since it may become a political discussion too.
