From Wikipedia:
The Long Island serial killer (also referred to by media sources as the Gilgo Beach Killer or the Craigslist Ripper) is an unidentified suspected American serial killer who is believed to have murdered 10 to 17 people associated with the sex trade over a period of nearly 20 years and dumped their bodies along the Ocean Parkway, near the remote Long Island beach towns of Gilgo Beach and Oak Beach in Suffolk County and the area of Jones Beach State Park in Nassau County.
The remains of four victims were found in December 2010, while six more sets of remains were found in March and April 2011. Police believe that the latest sets of remains predate the four bodies found in December 2010.
On May 9, 2011, authorities surmised that two of the newest sets of remains might be the work of a second killer. On November 29, 2011, however, the police announced that they believe that one person is responsible for all 10 deaths and that they did not believe that the case of Shannan Gilbert, an escort who was missing when the first set of bodies were found, was related. "It is clear that the area in and around Gilgo Beach has been used to discard human remains for some period of time," said Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota.

Thoughts? The Long Island a.k.a. Gilgo Beach serial killer case has been featured on America's Most Wanted (on their website at least, would like someone to clarify if they were on the actual show), and has been featured on the new syndicated crime show "Crime Watch Daily." I will post their website article which features all three segments below the admin notes. The big controversy over the years has been the fact that Shannon Gilbert's death, which led to the discoveries of the female bodies in the first place, has yet to be a ruled homicide. There is now an update on that:
The family of Shannan Gilbert announced that an autopsy performed by famed forensic pathologist Michael Baden didn't conclude how the 24-year-old escort died, but noted that she had been the victim of some violence. Baden says that she may have been strangled.
This is significant because the Suffolk County Police had previously suggested that Gilbert had drowned herself in a drug-induced haze. But family member's say that Baden's findings- which show no evidence of a drug overdose or drowning- should be enough to open a murder investigation into Gilbert's death.
Shannon's disappearance is significant because Dr. Peter Hackett, a man whose house Shannon may have stayed in. has come up as a possible suspect in this case. Hackett called Shannon's mother only two days after her disappearance claiming he ran a wayward house for girls and was concerned because she was upset.
Crime Watch Daily's cameras confronted Dr. Hackett outside a Suffolk County courthouse (he is being sued for wrongful death in Shannon's case)- and he denied ever running a halfway house for girls and/or having anything to do with Shannon's death. Bizarrely, after he was questioned "what about all the other girls?", Hackett seems to have a heart attack. But then claims it was just his defibrillator. And asks the people with him to take pictures of the "clowns" who caused it.
Anyway, my feeling is this is a bizarre but sad case and I feel Shannon was very obviously murdered. The big question to me is could Dr. Paul Hackett be the Long Island/Gilgo Beach serial killer, or could there be multiple killers, Hackett involved or not.
