SOUTH BURLINGTON - Anyone with information that leads to the arrest of arrest of murder suspect Leroy Headley could be awarded $5,000.
The South Burlington Police Department held a news conference Monday, saying the search for Headley, 36, is still active but has not yielded further information as to his exact whereabouts. The U.S. Marshal's Service, which is leading the manhunt, will put up money for the reward.
Headley is suspected of shooting and killing his longtime partner Anako "Annette" Lumumba, 33, in a South Burlington apartment on May 3.
"To this day, his current whereabouts remain unknown," said Chief Trevor Whipple. "That's why we come back to the media, we come back to the public asking for further assistance."
Detective Chris Bataille, the lead investigator in South Burlington, said Headley should still be considered armed and dangerous and that, based on his criminal history, police are concerned "he may pose further threat to whatever community he is currently residing in."
An arrest warrant for Headley has been issued on suspicion of second-degree murder in the case involving Lumumba. He is also wanted on a sexual assault charge in an unrelated case involving a minor.
Police believe Headley is likely receiving help to remain hidden or living under an assumed name. A news release stated that the investigation indicates his departure may have been planned. Whipple said police are assuming Headley is still alive "until we can prove he is not."
Headley's car was found on May 18 in Albany, New York. He had called his lawyer four days prior and said he would turn himself in to authorities.
South Burlington police detectives have continued to file search warrants and investigate whatever possible in Vermont. Police on Monday distributed two more recent photos of Headley, provided by Lumumba's family, to help with the search.
Police said Headley was known to previously reside in Jamaica, and he also traveled to Brooklyn and Queens in New York regularly. They said they hoped media in those areas, in addition to Albany, would also distribute the new photos and information about Headley.
"Let's share it everywhere," Whipple said. "We want to bring him back, we want to bring him to justice, and we want the Lumumba family to move to the next phase in their grieving."
ataille said he's continued to meet with Lumumba's family in the meantime. He read a statement, approved by Lumumba's brother, at the news conference.
"The Lumumba family said they want to know how long he wants them to suffer wondering where he is and if he might come back and harm them," Bataille said. "The children have nightmares and difficulty sleeping, and they know that nothing can bring back Annette, but they seek some sort of closure to the horror of all of this. ... Each day he is at large brings them fresh worry and fear."
After the news conference, Bataille said he's been inspired by the patience, grace and helpfulness the Lumumba family has displayed throughout the investigation.
"While investigating this case, I have not heard a single member of the Lumumba family wish harm of any kind on Mr. Headley," Bataille wrote in a text message. "Rather, they simply want him to do the right thing and face the consequences of his actions."

Thoughts? As of this posting date, Headley still has an active wanted poster on the U.S. Marshals website (as seen in link above). Also, a couple of other important things to note. One is Headley reportedly admitted in a phone call to police that he shot Annette Lumumba. Also, when authorities found Headley's car, they discovered a handgun, a cell phone, and a note addressed to the two children he had with Annette. They sent the phone to be unlocked by the Marshals service. In my opinion, Headley should be considered alive, armed, and dangerous until the day his body shows up. Typically, people who plan on committing suicide don't drive 3 hours upstate (how long it would take from Burlington to Albany according to a google search I did) and then kill themselves. Then you have the factor that he's wanted for the alleged sexual assault of a minor as well. In my opinion, I think he would be a good addition for the U.S. Marshals Top 15 list.
