If he has been in the U.S. all this time, his money has to be running low sixteen years on unless he has committing other crimes we don't know about. The Ohio sighting tells me he's really on the move if it was indeed him.

Guys/girls stay on the run for two reasons (besides going to foreign countries where extradition is difficult)- 1. They assimilate themselves somewhere or 2. They are constantly on the move making them harder to track. Would obviously be the latter if it really was Brown. Interestingly, I mentioned looking for Brown in places like Wal-Mart where he may be shopping for essential items and then that's basically exactly how they caught USMS Top 15-er Jeff Forrest, so further makes me hope they are looking for where Brown may be buying stuff seeking refuge etc... of course all depends on how credible the FBI feels the sighting is.

www.wmfd.com/article/'top-ten-most-wanted'-fugitive-possibly-in-richland-county/3434 “Authorities now believe that Brown may be in the Richland County area in 2020.” I take that to mean they really think they have a good tip to go on.

There's been a lot of seemingly good leads leading to dead ends in the past though- although I will admit this lead to me seems more promising than past ones. As I said, there is an LDS church in Mansfield so this lead is intriguing me more than past leads. Just I've been burned so many times by past leads I don't want to jump to conclusions. Hopefully this is finally the one that isn't a letdown. Oddly they are really publicizing the lead locally and the FBI itself isn't really publicizing it nationally.

I normally don't make "top list" fugitives Fugitives of the Week on our site since I prefer to focus on lesser known cases but I am making an exception because of the recent possible sighting of Brown in Mansfield, Ohio and naming Brown amwfans.com fugitive of the week for the work of May 17th-23rd, 2020. Hopefully this helps in generating a bit more publicity to flush him out of hiding.

If the police think they spotted Jason Derek Brown in a certain Ohio town, the LAST THING the FBI or local police are going to do is tell anybody about it. For obvious reasons of course. That's how the police operate. And the authorities are certainly not going to tell the media. I think the FBI already learned that hard lesson back in 2004. It's just another media fake news BS to help sell, what else, advertising.
If Brown were spotted somewhere, and the lead was credible, the police and FBI would be getting every video tape from businesses and stores they could get their hands on seeing what they could find. And during that process the last thing they would do is tip Brown off by talking to the media.
I did mention a while back in a post that Ohio was a possibility for Brown. Ohio is ranked 5th in the country for number of golf courses, and Brown was in an area where there are many fine golf courses. Just a thought.
I still think he's dead!

Actually, Brown was mentioned in the weekly mentions of wanted fugitives in the Mansfield Journal which coordinates with the Nothern Ohio Fugitive Task Force of the U.S. Marshals.
Also, they mentioned "Possibly" spotted. I'm skeptical every time I hear a new Brown lead myself, but I don't want to be too skeptical to the point where I'm dismissive.
While I respect your opinion, I disagree with your assessment that the media is purposely creating fake sighting stories. I do agree the media can get carried away and make a story bigger than it appears to be. Perhaps some random person thought they saw Brown when in reality they saw some white guy who looked like him and the local media runs with the "thought they saw Brown" angle.
I think the base stories are factual (a possible unconfirmed sighting of Brown for example) and it's how exaggerated or not exaggerated they are that is up for debate.

Also the FBI and US Marshals have publicized possible sightings of fugitives in their most wanted lists before, but it is usually a case-by-case basis.
If they feel they are zeroing in, they might keep the lead quiet but if they get information he or she is in a certain city but they can't narrow it down any further, they may ask for help, at least what I've seen from past manhunts.

This is somewhat similar I think to Santiago Mederos, where they do know the general area where he may be, but need the public’s help to pinpoint his location and thus the media shares the story.
I think it’s either Brown is still in that area and are pinpointing his location (obviously there’s no where to go thanks to this pandemic), but then again, Brown if in Ohio would have probably fled there sometime early this year and developed that information perhaps through footage at certain locations or there are certain attributes that are damning and similar to him.
The second part happened with former Top Tanner Greg Alyn Carlson, they spotted him a month after being on the top ten list, it was so huge, the FBI bumped him up on the top ten section, released a press article on the possible sighting and it may have to do with the vehicle in question that may have caused the sighting as Carlson still had the vehicle in his possession up until his death in February 2019.

Well I do want to add davep does have a good point about how the media leak is what caused the FBI to not catch Brown right away in the first place, So the FBI does err on the side of caution when it comes to lead. In retrospect, it makes sense they're not really publicizing what is a local potential lead.
The Ohio lead is not the first lead on Brown, there have been numerous supposed sightings during his 15 plus years on run that have lead to dead ends, so I'd also advise against getting tunnel vision the other way and just assuming a lead is legitimate every time there is a possible sighting.
Although not a top ten fugitive, AMW fugitive Dennis Lilly, a decades-long prison escapee was supposedly spotted teaching parasailing classes in Mexico in the early 2000s. A decade or so later, it turned out he was living in a suburban town in Washington state the entire time he had been on the run (and passed away while on the run as well). I think someone honestly thought they spotted Lilly, but it obviously was not a legitimate sighting.
I know this sounds like damned if you do damned if you don't, but in my opinion, we shouldn't be immediately dismissive or overly optimistic every time there is a lead on Brown. (I am not accusing anyone here of being either one). Take every lead for what it is and hope for the best.

Davep,
Just curious why you think Brown is dead as well as I feel we haven't discussed this as much.
Although I think Brown is alive and out there somewhere, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if you were right and we find out Brown was dead this entire time, as it would explain how he still hasn't been caught despite relatively decent clues to work with.
I agree with you that dead is a possibility, just curious as to why you believe he may be.

Hi SHunter,
1.) Brown made so many mistakes leading up to the crime. He's not a pro. Since he's not a pro I just don't think he's smart enough to run for 16 years without a single sighting "confirmed" by the FBI.
2.) I don't believe Brown can commit crimes for 16 years for a living without getting caught and of course fingerprinted. Also, he's to lazy to go straight and work for a living. At 34 he never worked.
3.) Here's a surprise. I don't think Brown meant to kill Kieth. I don't think that was his game plan. I think he wanted to take the money, tell Kieth to lie down, take Kieth's gun, and run for it. But Kieth didn't cooperate. Instead, Kieth went for his gun, as evidenced with his gun next to his body. Brown panicked and killed Kieth. Brown shooting 6 times instead of once or twice is a sign of panic in my opinion. Nobody has ever seen the entire video of the crime from all the camera angles. All they show on TV is Brown running away, stumbling, then running again.
4.) So now Brown has $56,000 of blood money. He just took a human life. How does he feel? He hides his emotions well playing golf with his brother David after the crime and staying with his sister in Orange County, but how does he feel when he's by himself. When he doesn't need a facade. When the act of what he did confronts him and he has no more diversions to hide behind. There use to be a picture of Brown on the internet wearing a red-striped shirt. He's at the bank teller window depositing some of his blood-money days after the crime. The lady servicing him goes off to do something, and Brown is left there for awhile by himself with his thoughts, blood money, and the memory of taking a human life. In the picture he is clearly not a happy man. He looks depressed to me. Very depressed! Sometimes just a quick bank-snapshot can capture a split second into ones state of mind. That one picture alone does it for me. I think he took his life within a year after the crime, but went through a lot of trouble for his body not to be found. Maybe killed himself in some small remote cave in the vast Canadian wilderness would be one way. Animals would scatter his bones and he would never be found. Anyways, just my thoughts. Dave

Gotcha. I don't want to sound like I'm making Brown out to be some sympathetic character in any way- whether he meant to kill Keith or not- he wound up allegedly killing him in the commission of a felony. But I have also thought he was supposedly religious- and if based on his Mormon faith if he had any remorse about what happened. It is also a big jump to go from petty thief to alleged murderer.
A couple of things to throw out:
1. Brown was described by the guy whose truck he accidentally shot at while allegedly doing target practice as "incredibly calm." when he called him for an estimate. This call happened just a few hours after Brown allegedly shot and killed Keith. This doesn't mean he wasn't secretly pooping his pants put on the phone he sounded like he didn't have care in the world.
2. Brown allegedly told people he was planning on taking someone out for money. Granted in a jury trial this would be considered hearsay, but he did allegedly say it.
My major problem with the suicide theory is Brown seems too vain to kill himself, but of course just because you're cocky and arrogant doesn't mean you can't feel guilty about killing someone.

Hi SHunter, Suicide Angle.A lot of people who are vain and cocky kill themselves. Your right that Brown made a huge jump from petty con jobs to murder. That's a HUGE jump. Maybe over a couple of years it was a jump he couldn't handle mentally anymore. Taking Someone Out.Yes, allegedly is hearsay in a courtroom. Brown would be an idiot to say that to anyone. I'd throw that one away. I want more concrete stuff. It's the lame media who likes words and phrases like allegedly, maybe, possibly, could have, might have been, etc. The media can give a story legs by always using those words. Truck Owner Had To Be Thinking.Brown really took a chance by deciding to go ahead with the crime after shooting that truck and then confronting the truck owner. Put yourself in the truck owners shoes... 1.) You meet Brown in the desert shooting without a backstop that hits your truck and then... 2.) You hear about an armored car robbery on the news. It's only natural for the truck owner to maybe put 1 and 1 together and start speculating. I think Brown knew this, so it was imperative for Brown to be calm when talking to the truck owner over his cell. Remember, Brown was a con-man before a murderer. Days later
Brown sent truck owner a check and a gift card for his boy. Yes, Brown was worried about truck owner connecting the dots, so Brown makes damn sure he's calm and generous to boot. It probably would have worked if Brown didn't leave his fingerprint on the bike.
Yes, I agree, whatever Brown's plans were he still killed Kieth and should be pay for it. I have ZERO sympathy for Brown Dave

Very good points, I always wonder if we'll ever figure out the mystery (taking nothing away with how tragic the case is, the wondering about how it will be solved if it is ever solved always gets to me more than other cases where the backstory and manhunt is more matter of fact than a typical crime story or typical manhunt- while everything about this case is more unique than others), but I've been wondering that for over a decade and a half.
