Just a note that I still haven't included Hiers in the 'Hunt' capture directory since I am still waiting to see the Marshals officially confirm it.
It does seem he is definitely detained in China, but I understand they can't confirm anything until they get him back officially.

I still think if Hiers was NOT in custody- the Marshals wouldn't be so coy about it and would say sorry the reports are fake news. I think they are simply being cautious because they're dealing with China as opposed to a country that more regularly sends back fugitives.

Wow this is just nuts. English teacher in China isn't the surprise for me. It's everything else we're learning about his time on the run.

Well he has not been extradited to the USA yet, and we have ZERO updates about his current whereabouts since September. For all we know China may have released this man and he is free yet again.

Hi iamtheking,
Welcome to the forum!
While that is possible, extradition is often complicated and secretive.
I have seen cases where a fugitive has been unknowingly in foreign custody for years and all of a sudden there's news that they've been extradited back.
You certainly have a point but I guess it's just a waiting game at this point as the Marshals have neither confirmed or denied his capture.
I agree the updates are sometimes confusing and frustrating, let's just hope for the best.

Also the fact that everything about this capture has been very vague and only individuals close to the investigation have confirmed to news media here in the states that “he was in custody under heavy guard” in Shanghai. This is probably the most high profile capture in China in some time and we’re all pretty much seeing how secretive things are. Then again, this is what we would be up again if Lisbio Couto were ever captured.

BTW, it has now been a month since Hiers' capture was reported. Still no official word from the Marshals.

Once again China is a clandestine country and extradition is a tricky process. (They detained the President of Interpol and even managed to keep that a secret for a few days!). Marshals are not going to confirm Hiers until he is back on U.S. soil even if he's in some sort of detention in China.
It could take a month, two months, two years who knows.
Several media including Crime Watch Daily have reported Hiers as in custody in China (including Crime Watch- now True Crime Daily), but It would be reassuring to have official word, but unfortunately that could take a long time.

Actually, we do not even have an extradition treaty with the Chinese. Our best hope is that they deport him.

Right. I knew that but I'm so used to saying extradition lol.
The point is countries often send us back fugitives even if there's no formal extradition treaty (see Neil Stammer in Nepal) and the fact of the matter remains Hiers was likely in China illegally.
I guess the point is the news reports are he's in foreign custody and while in theory he could wind up getting released no one should panic unless there's a report about a snafu.
We could in theory not have formal (law enforcement) confirmation for a year or years and we all need to be patient.

Any updates on Dan Hiers? Seems to be very little news on his supposed capture.

Once again as I stated before it seems the news is this;
-Hiers is apparently in some sort of Chinese custody and/or detention according to news reports
-China is a clandestine country and along with the extradition/deportation process the Marshals wisely don't seem to want to make anything official until he's official back on U.S. soil.
This isn't Mexico which has been relatively quick lately. Hiers is captured according to news reports, but in theory it could be a year or even longer before he's finally sent back and we need to be patient on that front.
