Jesus Roberto Munguia, wanted for the murder of his long-time partner, was aired on the November 29th, 2008 episode of America's Most Wanted. Below is the archived description of the case:
Accused Girlfriend-Killer Used Kids As Leverage
Suspected gang member Jesus Munguia, 32, met his long-time girlfriend Sherryl Sacueza 14 years ago, when the couple was living in Southern California. The FBI says Munguia spent his time stealing cars and racking up a hefty rap sheet for crimes like assault. Things got so bad in the Golden State that Munguia eventually left and headed to Las Vegas with Sherryl in tow.
Once in Nevada, the couple began having and raising children, but the situation for Sherryl at home was tumultuous at best. Investigators say that Munguia would cheat on Sherryl, and often assaulted her. In one instance, Munguia even attempted to kill the mother of his children.
In the spring of 2008, Sherryl decided that she had had enough and left Munguia.
Sherryl's departure made Munguia insanely jealous, especially when he found out that only a few months after their split, Sherryl had found a new boyfriend.
On July 2, 2008, the FBI believes Munguia called Sheryl and threatened to hurt their children if she didn't come over.
It was 1:30 a.m. when she arrived at the home and Munguia had their children sequestered in the home. Authorities say Munguia lured Sherryl out of the house and the pair drove off in her SUV.
It was the last time anyone would see Sherryl Sacueza alive.
Las Vegas Manhunt For A Suspected Killer
The FBI says Jesus Munguia killed Sherryl sometime in the morning hours of July 2, 2008. He returned her vehicle to his residence with her remains in the backseat. The next morning, Sherryl's sister and her children saw Sherryl's SUV parked in the driveway and made the chilling discovery.
The FBI believes that Jesus Roberto Munguia is being protected by his family, and may be hiding out in the California cities of Los Angeles and San Bernardino.
Munguia has many tattoos and is a known Tepa gang member. He always keeps his head shaved and is missing part of his right index finger. Authorities believe that Munguia will do everything in his power to stay out of jail.
Thoughts? This case highlights why domestic violence cases are unfortunately so difficult for women to get out of. So many times someone will say "Why didn't she just leave him?" Sheryl did leave him. She wound up dead anyway. It's very frustrating, and while unfortunately I'm not sure if a woman can ever feel safe with an abusive ex still out there, it is why battered women's shelters and domestic violence resources and websites are so important.
As for Munguia's whereabouts, it seems he may be hiding in California since the FBI thinks his family and/or gang are possibly hiding him. This means it would be easy for him to hide in relative plain site. If Munguia fled to another country like Mexico, he's not a native, which should make it easier for extradition should he be caught anywhere else.
