Outlawtaco plays video games and 912th has expressed frustration with the perception of those who play video games so I thought this would be an interesting topic for them and others here who play them.
In circa 2014 started the "Gamergate" controversy, which was apparently an online campaign against mainly female video game executives and female journalists who had expressed concerns about misogyny and rape culture in video games. The "Gamergate" movement was essentially a right-wing backlash over what mostly male gamers felt was feminism interfering and playing too much of an influence on games. Women were targeted harassed sent death threats etc... mainly through anonymous online platforms such as 4chan.
The FBI did an investigation and no one was ever charged despite some men even admitting to participating in some instances of harassment. There were apparently logistical and jurisdictional issues when it came to prosecution.
Thought this would be an interesting topic for everyone to share their thoughts and I've included a few links including the CBI's redacted report on their conclusion to the investigation.
I will say this also somewhat ties in to politics considering the increase of online bullying we now see in the age of Trump. So the difficulties of regulating video game users who engaged in ozone harassment in opinion an overall microcosm of the pitfalls of the internet.
