(Above photo credit: fbi.gov website) From the fbi.gov website: Reward: The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the deaths of Carnell E. Sledge and Katherine C. Brown. Additional reward money may be available. Details: The FBI's Cleveland Field Office and the Cleveland Metroparks Police Department in Ohio are asking for the public's assistance in identifying the person or persons responsible for the deaths of two victims. Details: On June 4, 2019, at approximately 5:00 p.m., longtime friends Carnell E. Sledge and Katherine C. Brown arrived at the Rocky River Reservation in Fairview Park, Ohio. Both met at a pull-off lot north of the Lorain Road bridge. Sledge and Brown were shot in the head while sitting on a bench alongside the river. Sledge was 40 years old at the time of his death, and Brown was 33 years old at the time of her death. Submit a Tip: Anyone with information regarding these murders is asked to call the FBI's Cleveland Field Office at (216) 622-6842, the Cleveland Metroparks Police Department at (440) 331-5219, or Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County at (216) 252-7463. Tips can also be submitted at tips.fbi.gov.

One weird aspect to this tragic case now on the FBI website is that despite the description of Carnell and Katherine as longtime friends, not many people who knew Carnell knew Katherine as well, including Carnell's parents, according to one online article: www.cleveland.com/news/2019/06/parents-of-homicide-victim-carnell-sledge-did-not-know-woman-killed-with-him.htmlWhat is most important is solving this case. I can only speculate but I hope this was not a racially motivated crime as one unfortunately theory I fear cannot be ruled out is the killer being angry at what he perceived to be a interracial couple (whether they were dating or not, the killer could have perceived it that way). In any case, there is no good reason to gun down two innocent people and both Carnell and Katherine's families deserve justice. I saw the episode- well done albeit in a terribly tragic way. I will say- I no longer subscribe to the hate crime theory as a possibility (although they did acknowledge it as one of many theories) because the shooting happened right after Carnell and Kate apparently called each other to meet up sort of seemingly abruptly. They were both shot just minutes after arriving at the park. This indicates to me one or both of them were followed. A hate crime or random thrill kill there would be too many elements of how just every single aspect of "wrong place, wrong time." would have to happen. Especillay in a park in broad daylight near a busy highway.
The theory that seems most discussed on the show and the one that I agree with although I'm sorry this seems to potentially unintentionally "blaming" one side for the other being shot- is that Katherine (Kate) was the target of someone she had dated. She apparently had an abusive ex-boyfriend she literally saw right before she was killed, and also had a tinder date with a man who had went to prison for a grisly murder the Friday night before her and Carnell (Nell) were killed also. Supposedly both of them had alibis, although I found the ex-boyfriend's alibi of being at a barbershop leaving unanswered questions since it was not stated whether there was surveillance proving this (the tinder date was supposedly confirmed to be in southern Ohio or something).
I will leave open a small possibility of some unknown would-be rapist wanting to abduct Kate in a crime of opportunity- Carnell- a 6 foot 4 tall 200 plus man was shot and killed first- remove the threat to get to Kate but once she ran away they had to shoot her- but once again just like the hate crime theory- the odds of this happening so fast right away just doesn;t add up to me (if Nell and Kate had been sitting on the bench for a half hour or an hour- it leads more credence to the suspect being a total stranger committing a hate and/or sex crime- more opportunity for something like that to happen- but not pretty much immediately after they sit down).
But yeah I really feel Kate was the target of an angry former lover of sorts and I'm not really comfortable with the most recently ex-boyfriend alibi of just "he was at the barber" without it being further explained.
It is still sadly a baffling case, and it's going to be hard to solve it even if there is a suspect as there needs to be an airtight case circumstantially, but hopefully the UM airing generates leads.
