From oanow.com:
The Opelika Police Department is asking for the public’s help in bringing closure to a cold case from 2000.
Mary Rearden was murdered in the early hours of Sept. 4, 2000, during a burglary of her residence, and no arrests have been made in the case, according to a news release from Opelika police.
“On Feb. 14, 2003, the governor of Alabama offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect,” the release reads. “This reward is still valid.”
Opelika police request any information about the suspect “to help solve this case and bring closure to the family of Mary Rearden,” according to the release.
An article in the Sept. 5, 2000, edition of the Opelika-Auburn News bearing the headline “Opelika investigating possible murder” said police were called to Bearden’s home on Second Street after relatives discovered her body around 10:10 a.m. on Labor Day.
“A family member made the 9-1-1 call to police after going to the residence,” the article reads. “Family members became worried after repeated calls to reach Rearden had been unanswered.”
The 75-year-old Rearden was pronounced dead at the scene by Lee County Chief Deputy Coroner Gene Manning, and the article says police said evidence at the scene indicated foul play.
“We don’t want to give out too much information because there are some things about the scene that only the killer would know,” the article quotes Opelika Police Capt. Melvin Harrison as saying. “But the evidence clearly suggests this was a homicide.”
Anyone with information on the case can contact the Opelika Police Department’s Investigative Services Division at 334-705-5220, or the Secret Witness Hotline at 334-745-8665.
Callers may choose to remain anonymous.
