On March 25, 1999, authorities say that someone fired gunshots at the Salinas, California trailer owned by the family of Felix Merendon and his 15-year old brother. Felix went up to Luis Ramirez and a companion and asked if they were the shooters. When Luis pleaded ignorance, Felix allegedly then shot Luis to death with a shotgun.
Felix went on the run afterwards, presumably either to Watsonville, California where he had relatives or Mexico.
In 2005, a federal appeals court overturned the murder conviction against Felix's brother. They ruled that the 15-year old brother at the time did not know that Felix would allegedly kill Luis Ramirez.

Thoughts? As of today, July 20, 2019, the 1999 murder case against Felix Merendon is still showing as active with no movement in the Monterey County Court Records since the warrant was issued back in 1999. Felix was on the Salinas Police Most Wanted page up until 2009 when the department stopped publicizing their most wanted fugitive.
As for Felix's brother, I didn't see any evidence of prosecutors appealing the overturning of the conviction. So as far as I can tell, he was released. Felix is presumed innocent until proven guilty himself, but it may be a tough defense since the appeals court did presume that Felix killed Luis and his brother wasn't aware of the murder intent.
