From Wicked Local Cambridge:
Six months ago, Paul Wilson, 60, died just hours after he was found beaten and unresponsive in Danehy Park, one of the safest areas in Cambridge. The case, which was ruled a homicide, remains unsolved and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said this week there are no new details to offer.
“There is not an update on the case but we do continue to ask for anyone with information to come forward,” wrote Meghan Kelly, director of communications for the DA’s Office, in an email response.
The initial report came in around 6:46 p.m. Jan. 2 after a witness saw an unresponsive man on the ground in the park, not far from the dumpsters and parking lot at the New Street entrance. When police arrived they discovered Wilson had sustained severe head trauma caused by blunt force, according to Middlesex DA Marian Ryan.
Wilson, who lived in a nearby apartment complex for more than 20 years, died of his injuries at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital just hours after the attack. During a press conference the next day, Ryan said robbery did not seem to be a motive since Wilson’s possessions were still on him.
When asked this week if there were any updates on leads, a murder weapon or whether investigators were able to get surveillance video, the DA’s Office did not provide a response.
Family has faith in CPD
The public mourned the longtime North Cambridge resident’s death, calling him a calm, level-headed, funny and intelligent person with an “encyclopedic mind.”
“Paul Wilson was a giant of a man with as big a heart. At 6-feet, 6-inches tall he towered over almost everyone, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it,” wrote his neighbor of 20 years, Carol Kelly, in an op-ed published soon after the murder.
Wilson was born and raised in Danvers and graduated from UMass-Lowell, before working most of his life at IBM, according to his obituary.
When asked how the family feels about there being no updates in the investigation, Wilson’s sister, Elizabeth Dobbins, said the family has faith in Cambridge Police.
“We miss him very much and are confident that the CPD is doing everything possible in working the case,” she wrote.
The six-month anniversary of Wilson’s murder comes at a time when the Cambridge Police Department is looking to create a Cold Case Unit, dedicated to cracking unsolved murder cases.
“We want the public to know, the victims of these homicides are not forgotten and we want these cases to remain visible within the community. We’re still doing whatever we can to potentially solve them,” said Jeremy Warnick, director of communications for CPD.
