From the Caswell Messenger website:
Cold cases often leave families with a lot of unanswered questions. One decade later, one Caswell County family continues to wonder what happened to Bobby Michalec.
In 2009, Robert Allen Michalec, 47, of Leasburg was last seen before he headed out on a fishing trip with two men he knew from work. According to previous reports, after spending the day fishing the two men said they dropped Michalec off at the dock near his home around 9:3o p.m.
The next morning when he did not report to work at Trout and Riggs, where he was a superintendent, calls prompted his sister’s checkup on him.
Donna Mosley and her sister found their brother’s body floating in Hyco Lake that afternoon. His hat and cooler were also recovered from the lake.
The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a body found floating in the water near Lakeshore Road in Leasburg and responded to the scene and recovery efforts were done by the Hyco Lake Authority, Semora Fire Department, Emergency Medical Service, and Emergency Management.
The body was later identified as Michalec’s who lived on the lake at the time of his death.
At the time the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office reported that Michalec’s death resulted as a possible drowning. His body was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
According to the medical examiner’s preliminary autopsy report, Michalec’s death was a result of blunt force trauma. The case moved from drowning to a murder case when the Criminal Investigations Division ruled out the possibility of the trauma being caused by an accident.
In August 2009 the Sheriff’s Department offered a $1,000 cash reward for any information that would lead to the arrest of the person or individuals responsible in the murder of Michalec. The state then offered a reward as much as $5,000 in 2014.
Michalec was a friend, father, brother and son. His mother Delores Watson said she wants him to be remembered.
“We want people to know he was loved and is missed dearly,” she said.
She also said that after 10 years it hasn't gotten any easier.
“It makes me angry,” Watson said. “We want to know who did this and I hope the detective assigned to Bobby’s case will be able to give us answers.”
The Messenger recently reached out to the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office who said they are unable to make a comment at this time.
Anyone with information about Michalec’s death is urged to call the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office at 336-694-9311.
