"Three months ago yesterday, RaeLyn Gonzales, fifty, and her eighteen-month-old grandson, Fabian Gonzales, were brutally stabbed to death in Adams County. Since then, no arrests have been made and precious little information has been released about the investigation.
But the Gonzales family has no intention of letting the deaths of their loved ones fall through the cracks. They're using public demonstrations and social media to keep the focus on finding the killer.
Details about the case are few, even after all this time. At about 7:30 p.m. on January 3, family members came to an apartment near West 66th Place and Federal Boulevard in Adams County and discovered a gruesome scene.
Raelynn and Fabian, for whom she cared, had both been stabbed to death.
"Oh my God, they're all dead! Help!" a neighbor heard one of them yell seconds afterward.
In the immediate aftermath of the killings, authorities in Adams County revealed little about the crime -- possible suspects, motive, anything. And that remains the case to this day.
Frustrated, the Gonzales family staged a rally and are keeping the memories of victims alive on the RaeLyn/Fabian Gonzales Facebook page
The family is also offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
The most recent post is eloquent in its simplicity: "#JUSTICE #JUSTICE #JUSTICE."
If you have any information about the case, you're encouraged to phone the Adams County Sheriffs Office at 303-288-1535."
Thoughts? If you take a look at that Westword blog page, you can see more pictures of Fabian and younger and older pictures of his grandmother that really hammer home what this case is about. Sometimes media articles can be sensational in the way they cover tragic cases and this is one of the most well done and respectful articles I've ever seen done.
This case seems eerily similar to the Thomas Hunter/Shirlee Sherman case that AMW covered in which an 11-year old boy and his 57-year old caretaker were brutally stabbed to death in their Omaha home. In that case, a suspect was arrested and it turns out it was believed to be revenge against Thomas's father, a professor who had fired the suspect that worked in his department.
But in this case, who knows. It is rather frustrating in how little there is to go on, and I can only hope the massive social media effort can help. And once again, this hammers home why shows like AMW were necessary as it gave a voice to the voiceless, and this family needs all the help they can get.
