From The Bluefield Daily Telegraph:
BLUEFIELD, Va. — The search for a suspect who shot a Bluefield, Va., police officer during a traffic stop early Sunday morning continued Sunday afternoon.
The suspect in the shooting is Donquale Maurice Gray, 25, according to Bluefield, Va., Police Chief M. Shane Gunter.
Gunter said Gray is believed to be armed and dangerous. He is 6’1, weighs185 pounds and has brown eyes and black hair.
According to information from the Virginia State Police, the incident began around 11:45 p.m. Saturday when the Bluefield, Va., officer initiated a traffic stop on a 2008 Toyota Yaris for an equipment violation.
“The Toyota, which had been traveling east on Route 460, pulled off to the shoulder near Exit 3 (which is within the town limits of Bluefield, Va.),” the State Police press release stated.
Gray was a front-seat passenger in the Toyota and the driver was an adult male, according to the State Police. “During the course of the traffic stop, Gray began shooting at and wounded the Bluefield, Va. police officer as he was standing outside the vehicle on the driver's side.
“The Bluefield, Va. officer and a second Bluefield, Va. officer, who had responded to assist with the traffic stop, returned fire,” the State Police press release continued. “The Toyota's driver got out of the vehicle and surrendered. Gray got into the driver's seat and drove off.”
According to the State Police, the Toyota was found abandoned a few hours later in Bluefield, W.Va.
The wounded police officer is being treated for serious, but non-life threatening, injuries at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the State Police release stated.
The officer’s name has not yet been released.
The second Bluefield, Va., police officer was not injured in the shooting, according to the State Police. The driver also was uninjured. He was cited for a traffic violation and released.
The State Police report that the search for Gray is continuing and Virginia's Blue Alert remains active.
“All surrounding law enforcement and federal agencies are on the lookout for (Grey), Gunter said. “Gray is to be considered armed and dangerous.”
The Virginia State Police BCI Wytheville Field Office is investigating the shooting.
