(Above photo credit: doenetwork.org) Authorities in Texas are trying to identify a woman who was murdered in 1979. AMW aired this case in 1998. On Oct 31, 1979, the remains of an unidentified white female, in her early to mid 20's were found off Interstate 35 in Williamson County, Texas. She was called Orange Socks Jane Doe because she was found nude, except for a pair of orange socks. She had a large oval-shaped silver ring and had excellent teeth with no sign of dental work. She was strangled to death hours before she was found. An important clue was that she had two matchbooks, one from a Holiday Inn in Henryetta, Oklahoma. In 1982, the infamous serial killer Henry Lee Lucas confessed to this murder. He claimed that he picked her up in Oklahoma City and killed her after they stopped at a truck stop to eat. Texas Governor George W. Bush commuted Lucas's death sentence to life imprisonment due to doubt that emerged in this case. Lucas confessed to 350-600 murders in total in order to get better prison living conditions. It was revealed that investigators would give Lucas case details and then he would confess to the crime. Among the crimes he confessed to was the murder of Jimmy Hoffa and the delivering of poison to infamous Jonestown cult leader Jim Jones. In the Orange Socks case, investigators later found a timecard that placed Lucas in Florida at the time of Orange Socks Jane Doe's murder. Lucas later said that he confessed to the murder in an effort for "legal suicide". Lucas died in prison in 2001. He was also the supposed accomplice to Otis Toole, who was later named the killer of Adam Walsh, even though Lucas wasn't involved in the Adam Walsh murder. Investigators are also trying to identify an anonymous female caller who called them three times about this murder. She claimed she saw the victim hitchhiking near Georgetown, Texas on the day of the murder. ----- Thoughts? I think we can all agree that Henry Lee Lucas is not the killer of Orange Socks Jane Doe. However, the only guess I have is that someone picked up the victim while she was hitchhiking and murdered her. **********UPDATE**********In August 2019, Orange Socks Jane Doe was identified as then 23-year-old runaway Debra Jackson. **********UPDATE**********Admin Note #1: According to the Doe Network, if you have any information on this case, please contact the Texas Department of Public Safety at 800-346-3243 or 512-424-2810Admin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-formdoenetwork.org/cases/33uftx.htmllubbockonline.com/stories/052806/loc_052806079.shtml

We can all agree on who isn't the killer, but of course the most important question is finding out who this poor woman was first.
While I don't want to stereotype every prostitute who is a victim, the Orange Socks Jane Doe had excellent teeth and health. And in many cases where a prostitute is murdered, that isn't the case. So that does give credence to this being a young woman who just happened to be hitchhiking, whether it be to get away from someone, perhaps an abusive boyfriend, or perhaps just wanted to explore the country. Not blaming the victim at all, but if she was, it's very dangerous for a young woman or even man to do that alone.
What's crazy is it wouldn't surprise me if that oval-shaped ring was the key to this case. Sometimes an item that you don't think is the most important is the key to solving it. While it may be too late over three decades later, I hope police did a decent job of interviewing jewelry stores in the nearby areas. It's just a hunch, but for some reason there's this gut instinct in me telling me the ring is very important in solving this murder.

I thought of a theory regarding this case.
According to the autopsy, the woman suffered from gonorrhea, which IMO would give credence to the theory of her being a prostitute. I think it's possible that someone she had previously been involved with might have contracted the disease as well, and either found out she was the carrier, or just blamed her regardless. If the killer was a married man, I especially can see him lashing out and possibly killing her for giving him an STD, since that would almost guarantee everyone would find out what he was up to. The problem is, given that we don't even know who she is, it's almost impossible to determine who she would have been with back then. If my theory is correct, the only way to crack the case would be a jilted ex-wife or girlfriend from 30 years ago mentioning their significant other cheating on them and contracting the disease.
I'm not saying this is what happened, but I thought it was an interesting theory nonetheless.

Theczar's theory is quite interesting and I can see it being possible. I also rechecked the doe network page and found out that the victim was killed hours before she was found. Anyone else find it interesting that she was found and most likely killed on Halloween?

I do find it interesting. It could be a coincidence, but it does make me wonder if it could have been some sort of sick ritual.

Really great we finally have a face and kudos to the amazing work of the DNA doe project!! I am assuming though there is still technically a killer that needs to be caught so I've changed the title of the thread from Orange Socks Jane Doe to Unknown Debra Jackson Killer.

The Sheriff basically is looking for any witnesses who saw her with Henry Lee Lucas right before her death. May be difficult after forty years, but I think it’s still possible. I have read, though, that there is some evidence Lucas was in FL when the killing occurred.
