"The mother of a 4-year-old boy who was taken from his custodial father two years ago and possibly was seen in Birmingham last weekend is back in jail.
April Joy Carrington, 34, was booked back into the Jefferson County Jail at 11:18 a.m. Friday, jail records show. She is charged with two counts of failure to appear in court which were issued Thursday, and was also sought on a fugitive from justice warrant out of Maryland. She is being held without bond.
Maryland officials on Wednesday issued a warrant against Carrington for taking Matthew out of the state sometime between Nov. 3, 2014 and July 21, 2016.
Carrington was released from the county jail Monday night after police said she shot the boy's father last week when he drove to Birmingham from New York to once again try to find his son. The father was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The FBI on Monday issued a lookout alert for 4-year-old Matthew. FBI spokesman Paul Daymond said Matthew may have been spotted in the Birmingham metro area on Saturday - more specifically in the Mount Olive area - but they have not confirmed that sighting.
Matthew was living with his father, who is retired from the U.S. Army and has legal full custody of the boy, in Maryland when he was taken from the father two years ago by his mother, April Carrington, and brought back to Alabama.
He was reported missing out of Severn, Maryland. He was seen in Birmingham in October. He was confirmed seen in Florida in December, said FBI spokesman Paul Daymond. "The fact that he hasn't been seen since then is certainly concerning,'' Daymond said.
Court records chronicle a two-year court battle between Carrington and and Matthew's father in Jefferson County's Family Court. According to those records, Carrington fought in Jefferson County to get custody of Matthew in Jefferson County even though Maryland had and has maintained jurisdiction and had awarded custody to the father.
Last week, said Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards, the father drove from Maryland to Birmingham on Presidents Day and was driving around north Birmingham looking for his son and his son's mother. He located Carrington near the Fountain Heights recreation center and tried to talk with her.
At that point, Edwards said, Carrington pulled out a gun and fired into the father's car, grazing him in the leg. She fled the scene, which was in the 1100 block of 15th Avenue North, and he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.
Later, Edwards said, Carrington came forward and voluntarily spoke with Birmingham police, claiming she had documentation to show she had custody of the child. On Feb. 22, Birmingham police charged Carrington with attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, both felonies.
Initially she was held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail, but she was released Monday night after posting $30,000 bond. Efforts to reach Carrington, and her mother Beryl Carrington, on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
The Carrington family has homes on Rosemary Road in Mount Olive and on 13th Street North in northern Birmingham. The FBI on Tuesday released new photos of a black 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander, with a Jim Burke dealer paper license plate in connection with the case, and said the SUV is believed to be in the Birmingham area.
Jefferson County Circuit Judge Teresa Pulliam on Thursday noted in court records that Carrington is in violation of the terms and conditions of the bond on the attempted murder charge, and also noted she has the outstanding warrant in Maryland for interference with child custody.
Authorities with the Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office in Maryland on Wednesday issued a wanted alert for Carrington. They said they are willing to extradite her back there.
The FBI said Matthew is believed to be traveling with suspects who should be considered armed and dangerous."

Thoughts? I am placing Matthew's case in the "Missing on TV" section since he is on the list of missing children for season 1 of Investigation Discovery's "In Pursuit with John Walsh."
Also I put Maryland/Alabama in the thread title since it seems authorities in both states are investigating Matthew's disappearance.
