Dora Chong has been wanted for 15 years for violating probation on a conviction for aggravated manslaughter of a child- the victim was her own 2-year-old son.
According to archived reports from the Florida Sun-Sentinel's website, Dora's son drowned in a pool in April of 2002 after she left him home alone to go out shopping on Palm Beach's Worth Avenue (which is an upscale shopping area compared to Beverly Hills) to buy a gift for a friend.
Chong pleaded guilty to the first-degree aggravated manslaughter, which was punishable by up to 30 years in prison, without having an agreement with prosecutors. Shockingly, the Judge gave her only 10 years of probation and returned her passport.
Chong disappeared in December 2003, shortly after she was no longer required to report weekly in person to her probation officer. A warrant was issued by the same judge in her case for her arrest in February of 2004. It was assumed by officials that she left the country.
Despite the paltry sentence, Chong's conviction did seem to generate some public debate- supporters filled the courtroom during her legal proceedings and described her as a loving mother completely devoted to her child.
Perhaps this was partially the reason for the light sentence. However, because Chong violated her probation, according to 2004 reports at least, she could face the maximum 30-year sentence if she is ever caught.

Thoughts? As of this posting date (1/6/2019), Chong still has a warrant for violation of probation according to Florida's public access wanted persons search website: pas.fdle.state.fl.us/pas/restricted/PAS/person/WantedPersons.jsf
In any case, despite posting this case today, I don't think Chong is a monster, and I actually do have a modicum of sympathy considering the circumstances and what her loved ones say about her. At the same time, if she can afford to shop on Worth Avenue, she can afford to hire someone to watch her child. Perhaps she didn't think leaving temporarily would be a big deal and misjudged it.
And at the same time, one would argue she got off incredibly easy and it is completely baffling to me she would flee the country rather than continue probation that wasn't even weekly anymore.
So yes, I have sympathy for Chong. At the same time, I don't think it's fair to the legal system that she gets to decide when to end her arguably extremely lenient punishment that she plead guilty to. What she deserves or doesn't deserve if ever caught again should in my opinion be for the court to decide, not her.
