On February 19, 2002, at about 6 a.m., a man broke into the home where Carns was staying located at 1905 Orca Street. Richard Carns confronted the intruder who pulled out a gun and began shooting. Carns was fatally shot and died at the scene. Witnesses describe the suspect as a black male, in his mid-20`s, average height and weight.
