DEMOPOLIS, Ala. (WTOK) - It has been almost a year since the murder of Shannon Steele in Demopolis, Ala., and the case is still a mystery.
"When I got here and saw that there was tape around her house, and I actually thought it was a house fire or something, but never did I think that someone had murdered her," said Germaine Sanders.
Sanders was at work last December when her life took a dramatic turn. A Demopolis police officer was attempting to serve papers to someone on Queensbury Lane when a small child at the home told the officer someone killed his mom. The officer found Steele in the back bedroom of her apartment with an apparent gunshot wound.
That woman was Sanders' daughter.
"I'm lost in the dark because she was someone that didn't bother anybody and all she did was live each day raising her children. She'd go to work, she'd come home and take care of her children. That's all she did," said Sanders.
Steele's aunt, Valada Steele, works for the Marengo County E-911 and was at work when the call came.
"Once I got the news that it was her, the job title I have of being a dispatcher, I have to stay composed at my job, but I lost it after I left," said Steele.
Steele left behind four children. Her two youngest, ages 3 and 4 months, were at home at the time of the murder. Sanders says the older child has flashbacks of that terrifying day.
"It gets real bad sometimes when he sits and acts out what happened. And it's kind of tough for us, you know, because we can only imagine what he's going through. It has to be extremely tough for him because it's tough for us," said Sanders.
“This case is very tough because as a child and for him to articulate what he wants to say, it’s in his mind but he can’t really bring it out. So therefore it makes it kind of difficult for this kind of case to get resolved,” said Police Chief Tommie Reese.
Sanders says her daughter had no enemies and is unsure why someone would take her life. She is urging anyone who has information to come forward.
"From a little child, she never gave us any problems when she was in school. As a teenager, no problems. You couldn't ask for a better daughter," said Sanders.
Both Reese and the district attorney are requesting a $5000 reward from the governor for information that would lead to an arrest and conviction of the person or person who killed Steele. You may call Demopolis police at 334-289-3073 or the Tip Line at 334-289-1475.
“We’re hoping that someone in the community may know something about this, may have information about this or may have heard something about this, may be able to come forward and help us bring this family closure,” said Chief Reese.
