EATONVILLE, Wash. - A woman in her mid-60s was killed Monday morning in a drive-by shooting near Eatonville, sheriff's officials said.
Deputies and medics responded to the scene, in the 30900 block of Webster Road East, at about 3:30 a.m. after receiving a report of shots fired, said Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a woman in her mid-60s shot to death inside the home. She had been struck by a single bullet that penetrated an interior wall of the home and killed her, he said.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as Joanne Boyer, 66.
No suspect or suspects have yet been identified, Troyer said.
He said it appears seven to ten rounds were fired from a vehicle outside the home in a drive-by style shooting. The suspects then fled.
Sheriff's officials later said six people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, including the victim's husband, two boys aged 5 and 7 years old, and the boys' mother. None of the others in the home was injured.
Troyer said deputies have been called to the home before due to issues with a male resident there, and detectives believe the home was specifically targeted.
"The person that lives here who we've had issues with before, we'll be investigating to find out what he's got himself mixed up in that may have led to this," Troyer said. "He was here when the shooting went down. We had that subject detained, and we're talking to him."
A nearby neighbor told KOMO News that he heard at least five gunshots right after another. He said deputies arrived almost immediately after he heard the shots.
Sheriff's officials say the shooting is not related to another one early Monday a few miles away.
The two deadly shootings are the 12th and 13th homicides in unincorporated Pierce County so far this year. In 2017 there were a total of 11 homicides for the entire year.
"Before the paperwork is even done on the last one, there's another one, and so it is really taxing our resources," Troyer said. "Our detectives are just inundated with these major calls, because we're still working the rapes and burglaries and other major crime that goes on besides the homicides."
