From Fox 2 Detroit (fox2detroit.com):
DETROIT (WJBK) - Police believe a veteran who was shot and killed last year was the target of a robbery, but authorities still haven't been able to get any leads in the case.
It's been over a year. They had some suspects but no arrests," says Kenneth Thomas, the nephew of James Carter.
Carter, 54, was killed early in the morning of April 14, 2017 at the corner of John R and Edgevale. Detroit Police believe Carter may have been in the area to visit a friend, but, sadly, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
The killer, looking for someone to rob, shot the Air Force veteran in the chest during a possible struggle, taking Carter's life.
"It's how he was left in that street. To us, as far as what we know, he was shot and people left. From what we understand, a passerby had to call the authorities and let them know what happened," says Jeffery Carter, the victim's brother.
Investigators believe the killer may have lived in the area at one point. They continue to work all possible leads, but police still need the public to speak up. The family is begging for anyone to provide DPD with information to help capture the person responsible.
"If you're man enough to pull the trigger, be man enough to turn yourself in," says Jeffery Carter.
"It's a lot of unsolved murders out here but when you in the situation it's a little bit different. To know Uncle James is to love him, strong black militant man; no nonsense type of guy; very strong family man. His family misses him a lot and, yes, we just want some answers," Thomas says.
