Details of Disappearance
Stefan disappeared from Brooklyn, New York on July 24, 2008. He was abducted by his non-custodial mother, Marcela Claudia Barbat. A felony warrant for kidnapping was issued for her on December 30, 2008.
A photo of Marcela is posted with this case summary. Her date of birth is October 3, 1972, making her 35 years old at the time of Stefan's abduction. She's described as Caucasian, 5'6 and 120 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Marcela may use the last name Barbat-Alexander. Her nickname is Marci. She has a mole on the right side of her upper back and her ears are pierced.
Marcela took Stefan to her native Romania and filed for divorce from his father, Brandon Alexander Sharwin, once she arrived in that country. Sharwin is an American citizen who was born in Trinidad and Tobago. He arranged for three Americans to go to Romania and try to take Stefan back.
In February 2009, the three individuals took Stefan from his school in the central Romanian city of Sacele. The police quickly began looking for them, however, and found Stefan and the three Americans only yards from the Romanian/Bulgarian border. Stefan was returned to his mother's care.
Stefan's case remains unsolved. He is believed to still be in Romania.
