 BOZEMAN - Kevin Briggs, who escaped custody from the Law & Justice Center in Bozeman while still shackled on February 1st, has been added to the FBI's "most wanted" list. Briggs had been taken into custody after a woman he knew called 911 saying that Briggs drugged and tried to rape her. Not long after authorities detained him, he escaped from the Law & Justice Center. Court documents state that Briggs caught a ride to Missoula and was dropped off at the Greyhound bus station. The person who drove Briggs told the FBI that during the trip to Missoula, Briggs talked of his travel plans. Briggs reportedly said that he planned to go to Seattle, then head south through Oregon and California and enter Mexico without using a border station. He allegedly said he planned to move between homeless shelters, while earning enough money to continue traveling. Briggs said he would keep traveling south and planned to take a ship across the Atlantic to Russia, where he could avoid extradition. He also reportedly said he would grow his hair out, dye it black and grow facial hair as a disguise. Briggs said he would not return to Montana. Brigg's friend gave him money for a bus ticket to Spokane and last saw him at the station around 11:30 p.m. on February 1st. Police confirm he left Missoula on a bus the next day. The FBI says that at the time of his escape, Briggs was on probation for convictions in 2004 on charges of sexual intercourse without consent, aggravated kidnapping, escape, and burglary in Lewis & Clark County. Briggs has family in Oregon and has previously absconded to California following a felony charge of escape in 2006 in Powell County. The FBI alert says that Briggs should be considered armed and dangerous, possibly suicidal, and a flight risk; it also notes that he has "violent tendencies." I want to stress that local news reports often get the meaning of FBI "most wanted" wrong. Briggs is now on their overall most wanted website, but he is not on their top 10 list.
Still, I decided to add him as a second/breaking news case because anytime you have an escapee who has harmed women in the past it's imperative he get caught right away. Not to mention the bizarre and convoluted plan to get to Russia. He obviously won't get there right away, but he needs to be caught before he can if he was telling the truth to the informant and wasn't trying to purposely throw people off.

I'm not sure as to how he could make it onto a ship and get all the way to Russia in the direction of the Atlantic Ocean, considering he's a wanted fugitive. However, he needs to be arrested as soon as possible since he appears to be a very dangerous career criminal that's also at least somewhat intelligent.

Everything Briggs was telling the informant seems to be adding up (travelling West to get to California and then go into Mexico) although he's probably still in California at this point, and it's also a long way to Russia.
