(Above photo credit: amw.com archives) Oscar Rene "Popeye" Cabrera is wanted out of Los Angeles for several violent crimes. He was aired on AMW three times from 2000 to 2003. On Jan 19, 1997, Cabrera and Harvey Lariano spotted several men playing football, including two wheelchair bound men. According to witnesses, Cabrera and Lariano thought the men were rival gang members. Cabrera shouted a gang slogan and opened fire, wounding one of the wheelchair bound men. Then, bystander Ramon Placencia yelled at Cabrera, "don't shoot them, they're cripples!". Cabrera responded by shooting him dead. Authorities say Cabrera is also a suspect in several armed robberies, assaulting the grandfather of his own child and for a high speed chase where Cabrera shot at members of the LAPD, after the chase, Cabrera disappeared into a crowd and fled. Thoughts? There's really nothing online about "Popeye" so I'm assuming the LAPD has no clue as to where he is. He was a MS-13 gang member and may have fled to Mexico or his native El Salvador. I wouldn't be surprised if he's currently working for a drug cartel in Latin America. Admin Note #1: If you have any information on this case, based on wanted location, our advice would be to call LAPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or submit a web tip to them at the following link: www.tipsubmit.com/WebTips.aspx?AgencyID=365 Admin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

Why on Earth would a guy think wheelchair bound men are gang members? He's an idiot, but a dangerous one.
Considering the passage of time he is likely in Mexico or El Salvador.

Haven't found any new articles on Cabrera over the past few years. Although because I've read news stating otherwise I'm assuming that he is still wanted as of this update. (6/9/2018).
If anyone has any updates/proof-of-updates one way or the other, please feel free to let us know.

As of today, August 27, 2020, the 1997 cases against Oscar Rene Cabrera in the Los Angeles County Court Records database show no movement since they were issued in 1997. The deposition status is also in "case pending" status. Therefore, we know for sure now that Cabrera is still at large.
