From the East Bay Times website (eastbaytimes.com):
One year later, Marj Courchesne says she still has no idea what led to the killing of her daughter at a quiet farmhouse near Byron where she was house sitting.
But the uncertainty is eating away at her and she wants to find out.
That’s why on the anniversary of 37-year-old Emily Courchesne’s death, the 70-year-old Concord mother and other family members continue to offer a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of suspects. And, to honor Emily and keep her story in the public eye, her family will gather Saturday at Concord’s Willow Pass Community Park where she played softball.
“We needed to do something to reconnect,” Courchesne said. “It’s hard to stay connected and talk about it. For a lot of people, the wound is too big to talk about.”
Courchesne is inviting anyone who knew her daughter to attend the 3 p.m. gathering and balloon release on Field 2 near the batting cages at Willow Pass and East Olivera roads.
Deputies found Emily Courchesne, a Danville resident, inside a relative’s home on the 24000 block of Marsh Creek Road near Byron after being called there shortly after 10 a.m. on Oct. 6, 2017. She had been housing sitting and caring for pets for her aunt and uncle, who were on vacation.
Detectives believe Courchesne was killed sometime between the night of Oct. 4 and the morning of Oct. 5, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said. An autopsy determined she had been shot to death.
Since then, the Courchesne family has waited while investigators sift through any potential evidence and follow leads, but to this day, there is little to go on. Authorities have not identified any suspects or persons of interest, nor have they said whether they believe it was a robbery attempt or if more than one person was involved.
“It has been very hard for us,” Courchesne said. “We know nothing in terms of what they (investigators) have been able to share with us. You just don’t know, which is the hard part. There’s all of this suspicion of the unknown. Anything is possible.”
Courchesne last saw her daughter at dinner in Pleasant Hill on the Wednesday before she was killed. But when her daughter didn’t show up for her drafting job in Orinda for a second day, she called the nearby farm to ask someone to get police to go check on her.
“I still can’t believe she’s gone,” Courchesne said. “I still wait for her to walk through the door. She wasn’t the type of person to have anyone around her who would do her harm.”
Courchesne said she misses Emily’s “laughter, her personality and sharp wit and conversation,” and hopes someone will emerge to offer a tip that will lead to an arrest.
“They say they have no leads, they’re still looking and still can’t access information from her phone to see who she may have spoken to,” Courchesne said.
“We just would like to have some closure, we’d like some justice for her,” Courchesne said. “She was very bright. She had plans for her life that she didn’t get to complete. Knowing her dreams is the hardest to deal with — that’s where lies my great sorrow.”
Lee said the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case.
