News10NBC is taking you Inside the Evidence. We're going where you can't: inside police investigations of unsolved murders.
Right now, Rochester Police are hoping DNA evidence can catch the killers responsible for the death of Luis Roman.
He was 26 years old when he murdered inside his apartment on Dewey Avenue near Ridgeway Avenue.
"It was a very bloody crime scene and in the dead of winter," said RPD Major Crimes Sgt. Flamur Zenelovic.
He says a group of men in masks shot and killed Roman on Jan. 22, 2007.
The victim worked for a cell phone business in the city. He lived in an apartment above some shops at 1460 Dewey Avenue with his wife. She was out of town the morning he was killed.
"The suspects were all described as being male blacks that were wearing dark clothing with masks over their faces," said Sgt. Zenelovic.
The suspects kicked in Roman's apartment door just before 2 a.m. and shot him multiple times.
"The death of the victim was pretty instant," said Sgt. Zenelovic. "He wasn't transported. He was pronounced dead right at the scene. No chance of survival at all."
Investigators believe the motive was robbery. In this case, there was a witness to the murder.
Another woman was with Roman in his apartment. She was not hurt, but couldn't provide much of a description since the suspects were wearing masks.
"The suspects fled through the rear of the apartment building, over this wooden fence, through some yards and out to Marigold Street," Sgt. Zenelovic explained as he showed News10NBC never before seen pictures from the crime scene.
He says several pieces of evidence are being examined right now at the Monroe County Crime Lab.
Investigators are also working to enhance surveillance video taken from some nearby businesses.
"From this we can piece together suspect descriptions, movements, the number of suspects," said Sgt. Zenelovic. "We owe it to family members, to the parents especially, to try and seek some justice for the victim."
Anyone with information on the murder of Luis Roman is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300.
