It was considered one of the best captures of AMW's short-lived Lifetime era, but now prosecutors will have to try again after a jury failed to convict accused child molester Joseph Chapman. Joseph Chapman, who escaped from prison wanted on various child molestation and rape offenses, was aired three times, including AMW's first post-cancellation Fox special, and its' first ever episode on Lifetime. In May of 2012, a neighbor in upstate New York, recognized Chapman after watching a 10 PM eastern rerun of Chapman's third airing. Unfortunately, a jury was unable to reach a verdict, but prosecutors have vowed to press on. (Had he been found not guilty- he would have been the first and only Lifetime capture to have not been convicted, with a couple of others presumably still waiting for their trial) www.bradfordera.com/news/article_b07eb8ee-7e6b-11e3-b0af-0019bb2963f4.html

I'm trying to figure out why this trial ended up as a hung jury. I read the article and there was some issues with the boy's claims which makes me wonder if some of the jurors didn't fully believe his story.

I was trying to and finally found this- but apparently there's been a number of setbacks in prosecuting Chapman- in August of 2013 a bunch of charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence. This trial itself was delayed after the defense attorney had a death in the family. Obviously, not anyone's fault there but it did drag out events even further. I think perhaps the jury didn't fully believe the boy's story, but as prosecutors point out, what he claims is likely beyond a normal 5-year old boy (who is now 12)'s comprehension. www.bradfordera.com/news/article_d3aa5bbc-fb8e-11e2-8276-0019bb2963f4.html

The only other possibility that makes sense is that some of the jurors thought that some of the adults made up the story to begin with and had the children lie to investigators.

Even if it doesn't, Pennsylvania should have its own sex offender statute to go by.
