Note: As of September 3rd, 2014, Asha Degree would now be 24 years old if still alive. Anyone having information should call 1-800-THE-LOST or the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office (North Carolina)at 1-704-484-4822
Fourteen years ago this February, 9-year-old Asha Degree disappeared from Cleveland County. After years of investigation by local law enforcement and no answer in her disappearance, Cleveland County authorities say they have a new lead to explore. A South Carolina-based TV station reported in the past week that a Spartanburg man arrested on charges in the 1990 murder of a 7-year-old girl in Greensboro could be connected to Asha. Donald Preston Ferguson, 52, was arrested this weekend in connection to the death of Shalonda S. Poole, who was found dead behind a Greensboro Elementary School. Ferguson was living in Spartanburg and arrested in Spartanburg County. He was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sex offense of Poole and is being held without bond in the Guilford County Detention Center in Greensboro. Could Ferguson have ties to Asha? It’s another lead to explore in the case, said Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman. “Between 1990 and today, he probably went through Cleveland County at one time,” Norman said. “It’s another lead we will explore in the Miss Degree case. We will look to see where he was and working 14 years ago.” Feb. 14 will make the fourteenth anniversary of Asha’s disappearance. Her family has told The Star the girl walked out of the house in the early morning hours that day in 2000 and never returned. The family and supporters remember Asha each year on the anniversary of the day she disappeared. Her case has been profiled by such programs as 'America's Most Wanted.' www.shelbystar.com/news/local/new-lead-on-asha-degree-1.261766www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/degree_asha.htmlAdmin Note : If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

I'm not sure what to think of the Ferguson lead but I do know 14 years is way too long for the family to wait to get answers. I hope they can finally learn where she is or what happened soon.

Also in addition to that this came out back in May 2016. "In May 2016, the FBI announced that their reinvestigation of the case had turned up a possible new lead. They disclosed that Asha may have been seen getting into a dark green early 1970s Lincoln Continental Mark IV, or possibly a Ford Thunderbird from the same era along Route 18 near where she was last seen later that night. It was described as having rust around its wheel wells". en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Asha_DegreeThis came from the Wikipedia page

This is one of the cases that has haunted me most since first seeing it on AMW! Most nothing about it stands logic or common sense as with a 9 year old running away in the wee hours of the morning, predawn, during or preceding a serve storm, as well said 9 year old being deathly afraid of dogs. The home door being still dead bolted, her being seen walking along side the highway adjacent her home, some belongings found in a shed a mile into the woods behind her home.
At nine years of age, even if determined, without aid, my body would remain conditioned to not awake any earlier than school dictated, as well my fears of venturing outside of my home at such hours and the potential repercussions of just my parents all would have hampered such an act. I've always felt the witnesses claiming to having saw her are the linchpin perhaps to the detriment of the case being solved given witnesses are not always right, credible, sometimes insert themselves into cases for histrionic purposes. If she was never walking the shoulder of that highway this case gets turned onto its head.
Her book bag being found buried 30 miles at distance the same stretch of highway as her home conveys the act of someone who knew her and familiar with the area. I desperately would like to see this case be solved!

Hi lawabidingcitizen, all great points, it seems very unfathomable to me she would willingly leave her house unless she was lured by someone or someones.
Unfortunately, the circumstances look bleak, but for the purpose of taking away the not knowing, I hope her case is solved one day, although over 18 years is obviously nowhere near soon enough.

I honestly think someone lured Asha away from her home. She wasn't the typical age for a runaway child, and by all accounts, had a good home life. The new information indicating she may have gotten into a car would explain this.

The Shelby PD in mid September gained search warrants for two homes and a assisted living facility owned by a local couple who have been named as suspects but not charged with murder yet so I will not name them back in 2017 police were looking for a early 70 Thunderbird or Lincoln Continental or similar era model the husband was seen digging a chest sized hole around the time of her disappearance two cars including a 1964 amc rambler similar to the car in question and numerous other pieces of evidence however asha is the most likely victim of a homicide hopefully justice and answers and remains are located for a proper burial wbtv.com is my source

I’m wondering: are they saying he hit Asha with his car? Or was she indeed lured in and then murdered? I ask because his car did have obvious damage to the front. Dedmon would have been 54-55 at the time of Asha’s disappearance. I’m wondering why they are all of the sudden executing these search warrants.

Yeah tbh I’m not sure either and I’d like clarification on that.

As opposed to the last case I commented on, I think Dedmon could potentially have a very good defense of manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide (depending on the statute in NC). If he did accidentally strike Asha, I can see how it may have happened: this happened in the early morning hours with inclement weather, and so it would have been difficult to see her if he did run into her accidentally.
Then again, he would have to explain why he covered everything up if he is responsible.
