I first read about this last year but only remembered to post about this right now. Below is the story about the dismissal of a 1996 arrest warrant. ---- A judge dismissed criminal charges and an arrest warrant against a fugitive accused in connection with a 1996 fatal hotel fire. Senior Judge Thomas Russell of U.S. District Court in Bowling Green signed the order dismissing the case Tuesday against Devinder “Dave” Sharma. Sharma was the co-owner of the Howard Johnson hotel in Bowling Green that was destroyed by fire on Jan. 6, 1996. Four people died in the blaze. Suresh Kumar, Sharma’s brother-in-law and co-owner of the hotel, and Joe Logan, a maintenance worker at the hotel, were convicted in 1997 of conspiracy and arson resulting in a death and are both serving life sentences in prison. Sharma fled the country after being charged in the case, and authorities have been unable to capture him. Russell dismissed the case and arrest warrant at the request of federal prosecutors, who said in court filings that the passage of years has left the government unable to viably prove its case against Sharma. www.bgdailynews.com/news/local/judge-dismisses-case-in-hotel-fire/article_5d030308-b97f-558b-afcf-9bfb1baa7b77.html?mode=jqmThe next article mentions that investigators feel that they could have never have apprehended Devinder Sharma in India due to the sheer population density. www.knoxnews.com/news/2013/aug/13/prosecutors-end-hunt-for-fugitive-after-17-years/?print=1It's very sad that the arrest warrant against Devinder was dismissed, although it seems unlikely that he could have been convicted. Thoughts?

As far as the chances of getting caught- population density wise it would have been hard but the U.S. and India have worked together to capture a few high profile criminals recently in Lakshminivana Nerusu and Amandeep Dhami. An arrest of an Indian diplomat in the U.S. has somewhat threatened the great progress the two countries have made so far, but I think much like a relationship when a couple has a shouting match and then make up the next day, this is a wound that should heal over time. ( www.dnaindia.com/india/report-devyani-khobragade-row-india-says-us-could-have-avoided-mini-crisis-more-to-be-done-1949205 ) As far as the charges being dropped, it's unfortunate, but it seems they had no choice. It is a shame though since it sends a bad message- if you are wanted, just flee to another country and stay on the run long enough to get your charges dropped.
