PRYOR, OK — Alfonso Mondragon has some distinguishing characteristics: a lazy eye, a deformed finger, a love of latin music - and an arrest warrant for murder.
Mondragon is classified as Pryor's most wanted.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the unsolved murder case involving Mondragon.
Despite having received national attention on television shows such as “America's Most Wanted,” the case remains unsolved.
“It may be a cold case but that doesn’t mean it’s inactive,” said Pryor Police Department’s Assistant Chief Derek Melton. “Ten years may have passed but we still want justice.”
In 2004, Pryor Police Officers responded to the scene at North Oklahoma Street in Pryor, after receiving a call advising them a white female was found non-responsive. Officers and paramedics arrived on the scene and found the victim lying face down in the bedroom. Her arms were above her head and her feet were crossed with her legs bent at the knees, according to initial reports. It appeared she had been dragged from the door of the bedroom.
The probable cause affidavit filed in the case says rigor mortis had set in and there was a suspicious wound on the victim's head. The official cause of death, as ruled by the medical examiner in the case, was said to be blunt force trauma to the head.
The victim was Shelley Huffman, Mondragon's ex-girlfriend. Information filed in the case describes a violent relationship with several incidents of Mondragon hitting and choking Huffman.
The residential search turned up a pair of blue jeans and a T-shirt that appeared to be blood-stained. Officers noted the clothes, found in the attic, did not appear to have been there long.
Mondragon, now 38, also goes by the name Alfonso Hernandez. He fled Pryor and officials believe he may have made his way to Tulsa, California or Mexico.
“I was on the scene, it was a late Saturday night and early into Sunday morning,” Melton remembers. “I was a detective then. I remember finding Mondragon’s blood stained clothes in the attic.”
Melton said he remembers the violent nature of the crime.
“It’s such a sad case. And as far as what provoked him to violence we may never know,” Melton said.
Melton said after the segment ran on television they received a few calls saying Mondragon had been spotted near Mexico City, but that they haven’t received a tip in roughly five or six years.
“Do we think we’ll ever catch him? That’s a hard question. Obviously we would love to catch him. We can’t just go to Mexico, track him down and drag him out of the deep country. It’s not that simple,” Melton said.
Mondragon is Hispanic, 5'8” tall and weighs 170 pounds. According to the segment on “America's Most Wanted,” he has worked in construction and as a welder. Anyone with information on the case is still encouraged to call the Pryor Police Department
