Somewhat of a frustrating lack of details but I still wanted to post Jay's case on our website because an 11-year-old boy's murder deserves to be solved after 40-plus years, and the recent arrest of the Golden State Killer in California perhaps gives some renewed hope for all cold cases. According to a 2006 article, a former deputy believes that a man named William "Freight Train" Guatney is Jay's killer. Guatney passed away in 1997 and was suspected in a string of killings throughout the midwest. Even so, I hope one day Jay's killer can be named, even posthumously, to take away the not knowing from any family members still alive today and to finally say his killer did not get away with his secret.
