Update: On Jan 26, 2015, the remains of Caledonia Jane Doe were identified as missing Florida girl Tammy Jo Alexander. However, the case is still unsolved and police still need help to find Tammy's killer.
Authorities in New York have spent nearly 35 years trying to identify a young woman or girl found in a corn field. AMW aired this case at some point, although I don't recall it on the old website, so it must have been aired sometime in the 90s.
On November 9, 1979, a farmer discovered the body of a young white female, age 13-19 in his corn field in Caledonia, New York. She was fully clothed, and showed no evidence of sexual assault. She had been shot twice to death and her pockets turned inside out. Heavy rains washed away any potential forensic evidence. The body was dumped somewhat near Interstate 390 which I believe existed before 1979 and also somewhat near Interstate 90.
The victim was seen at a diner in Lima, New York, a few hours before her death. She was with an unidentified white male, 5'8 to 5'9 and drove a tan station wagon. Pollen evidence found on the victim determined that she was either from or had vacationed from one of the following locations, South Florida, South Texas, parts of Mexico or certain parts of California which are the San Diego, San Luis Obispo and North Bay of San Francisco areas. She also had visible tan lines which indicated she got them in an area with abundant October-November sunshine. She wore shoes which may have been popular in the "Venjiont area", although no one online can figure out where "Venjiont" is. She also wore a necklace which resembled native american jewelry from the Southwestern United States, a promotional auto products jacket that could not be traced and a keychain which may have been from a roadside gift shop.
She was believed to have been shot with a 38. caliber handgun which could not have been traced to any tested weapon. Some believe that she may have been from Canada due to Caledonia, New York being somewhat close to the Canadian border. A trucker claimed that she was trying to hitchhike to Boston, Massachusetts.

Thoughts? I personally believe she was from the Southern US and hitchhiked to the Northeastern US. The Doenetwork link mentions she had some tooth decay and had no dental carewhich makes me believe she probably came from a lower-income family. She may have never have been reported missing by her family and was probably a runaway. I also feel that her killer will never be identified at this point since he's probably not related. The fact that he was driving a station wagon rules out the possibility of a truck driver serial killer. The identifyus link I provide contains listings of missing people who have been ruled out as Caledonia Jane Doe.
