Obviously we know by then there's been a school shooting in Broward County, Florida and likely fatalities but news still coming in.
I still remember when Columbine happened when I was still in high school and it was shocking back then and probably the penultimate day of America losing their naivety and ignorance to the world around them. (with 9/11 being the ultimate day of having lost it for good).
Sadly these cases have gone from shocking and tragic to routine and tragic and we continue to accept this.
Doing something about gun violence will never prevent these tragedies from happening again, but they can at least cut down on them.
We instead choose to sit back and let this become the new norm in our society.
I am thankful whoever this shooter is has apparently been apprehended alive so there can be some inquiry to why he or she did what they did.
Those are my thoughts about today.

Even though I was only a baby when Columbine happened and a toddler that oddly remembers small bits of 9/11 coverage, This is truly a sad day and ironic that it was Valentine’s Day, and some people feel like crap because they don’t have anyone else, not to jump to conclusion about motives or anything with regards to the incident but sadly it’s a tragedy through and through. I’m glad the shooter was captured alive because at least that way we can have some answers for what has happened, unlike other cases where they guy ends up dead or kills himself.

And now catching up on CNN after going offline for a few hours, 17 dead, apparently student who was previously expelled posted numerous stuff on social media and said he was going to kill people. As much as I've said there needs to be new common sense gun legislation (NOT TAKING GUNS AWAY- PEOPLE ALWAYS SEEM TO MISUNDERSTAND AND THINK THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS)- this one really should have been as simple as "if you see something, say something" to prevent. Usually when people post stuff like that, they're blowing smoke, but all it takes is the one person who means it to cause such havoc.

I saw that the number went up to 17 and honestly this is heartbreaking each time it’s happened, as you’ve said Scumhunter, if someone sees something say something especially in an era, where these things are a common occurrence now, I guess that’s what has to improve if Politicians keep dragging their feet and not proposing anything instead of just offering prayers to the victims and their families. I’m not saying the victims don’t matter, they do, but prayers really won’t solve anything, they won’t stop another shooting unless we have a piece of legislation that at least reduces the overall gun violence significantly and not have Gun Anarchy.

Agreed. I don't think it's right when people mock thoughts and prayers. But at the same time there needs to be more than thoughts and prayers.

Honestly this meme pretty much states how the media should react in the aftermath of these situations But anyways with regards to the FBI, I think they should’ve taken this more seriously from the start as they could have avoided a situation and lives lost.

Maybe I misread it as it seems it was mainly just one person who reported the YouTube comment. FBI says there was nothing specific to determine from account (it did have shooters name as account but it is a relatively common name). Still, there was also a disturbing easy to find Instagram of his. It does seem people were already concerned about this guy and should have reported him.

Honestly he just looked like bad news altogether, instagram is a platform of social media that I frequently use and the fact that the entire school that was affected was exposed to this obviously they knew what they were in for. Sadly enough, at my former high school someone decided to bring a weapon to school, and it comes just a day after this tragedy that’s the focus of our discussion. amp.fox5dc.com/news/local-news/clarksburg-high-school-student-arrested-for-having-gun-at-school

FBI Statement on the Shooting in Parkland, Florida On January 5, 2018, a person close to Nikolas Cruz contacted the FBI’s Public Access Line (PAL) tipline to report concerns about him. The caller provided information about Cruz’s gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting. Under established protocols, the information provided by the caller should have been assessed as a potential threat to life. The information then should have been forwarded to the FBI Miami Field Office, where appropriate investigative steps would have been taken. We have determined that these protocols were not followed for the information received by the PAL on January 5. The information was not provided to the Miami Field Office, and no further investigation was conducted at that time. FBI Director Christopher Wray said: “We are still investigating the facts. I am committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in this particular matter, as well as reviewing our processes for responding to information that we receive from the public. It’s up to all Americans to be vigilant, and when members of the public contact us with concerns, we must act properly and quickly. “We have spoken with victims and families, and deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy. All of the men and women of the FBI are dedicated to keeping the American people safe, and are relentlessly committed to improving all that we do and how we do it.” www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/fbi-statement-on-the-shooting-in-parkland-floridaLike I said, I've defended the FBI a lot here as they've had to deal with a lot of bs recently, but felt even they would admit they slipped up a bit here. They admitted they slipped up. I know it doesn't provide any solace to the grieving families, but the only way to correct mistakes is to learn what wrong and work on fixing that and it seems they're determined to do so. Edit: Shooter's name only posted above because it was in press release. Otherwise I refuse to mention him by name.

Honestly this has been a very awful week altogether. We had this terrible shooting in Florida, then as a result, we had kids the following day in Massachusetts, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama, Colorado, Florida, California, New York, Arkansas, Ohio, And Maryland, having schools where they either issued threats or took a student into custody for having a weapon and as I’ve stated, my former high school was amongst those that had to take someone into custody.
I want to speak up because the day after the Florida shooting was just pure madness and Bull****, my own brother, dozens of teachers and students I so dearly care about were in the building when that student was carrying a loaded gun inside the school, I shared that article earlier in this thread.
It’s uncomfortable for me as an older brother and as a former high school student attached to his teachers to have my sibling and wonderful faculty at school in the wake of one the worst recent school shootings, and being themselves under the threat just 1 day after a terrible tragedy.
Many kids in high school like to joke about school shooters and “ohhh this guy could be the next school shooter”, but what this week has shown is that if it can happen in Florida, it can happen anywhere.
I’ll shift the focus from Gun Control, to being more accepting of others, which is something that I think should be talked about too, which sadly has never been brought up as a discussion, only as a detail in which people respond to “he was a loser”, plenty of students all over this country feel like they aren’t accepted by society because they are weird, because of a mental illness, because people say they’re ugly or because they feel like rejects from everyone and that’s what needs to be addressed too.
Instead of pushing these kids away, calling them names, making fun of them, or rejecting them, make them feel welcomed to be apart of the community.
If we fix this and have some sort of gun control, I think we’ll manage to reduce these shootings greatly. Today’s kids can also make the difference too in preventing these tragedies too.

Just wanted to say how proud I am of the high schoolers from Stoneman Douglas, for their poise and resolve in their movement protests and media appearances. (I only caught a little of the CNN town hall but the students I did see ask questions were very impressive).
I think Sandy Hook was the moment we all thought would bring about real change in the country in regards to stopping the epidemic of mass shootings. Instead, it was the moment many of us gave up and said "if a bunch of elementary schoolers being brutally shot to death can't result in action nothing can."
I think the main difference here is those elementary students were obviously not old enough to be politically active yet. These students are old enough and smart enough to organize and demand real change. Some of the students at Stoneman Douglas are already old enough to vote and many will be soon. It was the youth who helped towards us getting out of Vietnam.
Basically, the teenagers at Stoneman Douglas and many high schools across the country are pissed off and not going to take it any more. Hopefully thanks to social media making movements like "#metoo" take off so too can "#neveragain"
I am still apprehensive because of how do-nothing Congress has been for pretty much the entire century, but the young, bright, and articulate students at Stoneman Douglas have given me reason to be cautiously optimistic for the future.

Really cool to see all the student walkouts/protests today. Although most of the adult school officials have been supportive, there are a few exceptions threatening suspension or other disciplinary action over "safety concerns".
To students in those schools, I tell them protest anyway and tell those officials based on the past few years you actually feel safer outside your school.
