COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Nearly 30 years after a 24-year-old mother was found murdered in Colorado Springs, police are hoping the public can help track down the killer with help from DNA evidence.
On Monday, police released a DNA phenotyping image of a possible suspect. A snapshot of the report can be seen at the top and bottom of this article.
Springs police released the following information Monday about the 29-year-old case:
HISTORY OF THE CASE
On Jun 5, 1988, a woman was found dead in the alley north of the 2600 block of West Colorado Avenue. The victim, 24-year-old Mary Lynn Vialpando, had died of blunt-force trauma injuries.
THE INVESTIGATION
Investigation revealed that Mary was last seen by her husband, his brother, and sister-in-law at approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday, June 5, 1988, just after returning home to the 2200 block of West Kiowa Street after attending a wedding in Pueblo. As they got out of the car near their home, Mary and her husband had a verbal argument, and she reportedly ran away from the area on her own volition in a westerly direction. The people she was with did not know where she was headed, and they were unable to find her after a short search.
A number of relatives, friends, and associates were interviewed, and extensive neighborhood follow-up was conducted by investigating officers. Witnesses were interviewed who believed they may have seen the victim inside of Roger's Bar, 2520 W. Colorado Ave., between 2:30 and 3 that morning, and thought she may have exited the bar through the back door leading to the alley. During the course of the investigation, several potential suspects were identified, and numerous items of forensic evidence were collected from the crime scene.
HOW THE SUSPECT SNAPSHOT WAS COMPILED
This year, police sought the services of a DNA technology company that specializes in DNA phenotyping. The service is the process of predicting physical appearance and ancestry from unidentified DNA evidence. Using available DNA evidence from the investigation, the analysis produced trait predictions for the suspect. Individual predictions were made for the suspect’s ancestry, eye color, hair color, skin color, freckling, and face shape. By combining these attributes of appearance, a “Snapshot” composite was produced depicting what the suspect may have looked like at approximately 25 years old. The end result is a composite of scientific approximations of appearance based on DNA. It is important to note the composite is not likely an exact replica of appearance.

-Skin Color: Fair/Very Fair (92.2 percent confidence)
-Eye Color: Blue/Green (85.1 percent confidence)
-Hair Color: Blond (99.4 percent confidence)
-Freckles: Few/Some (77.8 percent confidence)
