Haitim Mahir Taha is wanted by the Anchorage Alaska Police Department for his alleged role in the murder of a 17-year old boy.
According to news and police reports, on April 7th, 2017, Taha was driving a 2007 silver Monte Carlo 16 year-old boy named Anthony Salazar as his passenger. They were following a 2013 white Ford Escape with multiple people inside. The Monte Carlo continued to follow the Escape up until the occupants parked began exiting the Ford. It was at this time, police said, that Taha and Salazar drove by, and began shooting at the fleeing passengers.
17 year-old Leroy Lawrence, who just happened to be walking by on his way to a friend's house, was struck by a bullet. He was transported a hospital but would die a few days later.
One person in the group Taha and Salazar were allegedly aiming at was hit in the leg, but survived. Taha and Salazar allegedly fled the scene.
According to another news article, Taha and Salazar allegedly targeted the vehicle because of a prior altercation with a group of people who knew them. Apparently, Salazar and Taha had allegedly unsuccessfully attempted to burglarize a home. Salazar suffered a cut on his hand as a result of the botched robbery and would go to the hospital. At the hospital, him and Taha are said to have had a hostile run-in with the group of people police say he later shot at.
Anthony Salazar would soon be taken into custody (and according to reports is being charged as an adult, however Taha would become a wanted man, and at least is still listed on Anchorage Crime Stoppers as of this posting date (1/28/2018). I should note the official page says wanted as of 9/13/2017, but I feel that's close enough to assume he's still wanted and have seen no reports that he's been captured thus far.
Thoughts?
This is an incredibly sad case. Leroy Lawrence was an innocent teenager walking to his friends house at what reports say was 3:30 in the afternoon! Not that hanging out late is necessarily wrong, but he wasn't even doing that. If you can't feel your children are safe at 3:30 in the afternoon, when can you.
I get that Salazar is an alleged 16 year old punk. But why Taha at age 21 is even hanging out with someone four or five years his junior and allegedly robbing houses with him and shooting at his enemies is beyond me, and he really needed new hobbies even before the shooting.
Salazar is in custody which is good. Let's hope for full justice for Leroy's family soon.
