From The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle website (democratandchronicle.com):
Gates Police have released surveillance footage that they believes shows the man who committed an unsolved 2014 murder.
James Shaw, 58, was found dead inside his room at the Motel 6 on Buell Road on Jan. 23, 2014. Shaw had been living at the motel for several weeks before his death.
Investigators say the video shows Shaw entering the motel around 1:45 a.m. with an unidentified black male. That same man is seen around 3:00 a.m. leaving the motel by himself.
The suspect left the scene in Shaw's car, which was recovered three days later on Loomis Street in the city of Rochester.
Gates Police Lt. John Ballard said the video footage had not been released to the public before. Investigators are sharing it now, on the fourth anniversary of the crime, in hopes that someone will come forward with information that helps them identify the suspect.
Shaw was a night owl who frequented businesses in the City of Rochester, according to Ballard. He sometimes utilized crutches or a walker due to health problems. He was also part of a large, loving family who wants to help bring his killer to justice.
The Motel 6 on Buell Road was the scene of another homicide where surveillance video was used to apprehend the assailants. Donovan Zuhlke, 26, of Rochester, and 34-year-old Jessica Soble of Oswego are serving state prison terms for their role in the murder of Jehon Gervalla on July 24, 2015.
"We had no witnesses to this, but within an hour we had them figured out because of the cameras," Gates Chief James VanBrederode said at the time.
Anyone with any information regarding the murder of James Shaw is urged to contact the Gates Police at (585) 247-2262 or Crimestoppers at (585) 423-9300 to make an anonymous tip and be eligible for a cash reward.
