From NBC Sacramento (kcra.com):
SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) —
It's been 10 years since Eleanor Nichols was found shot and killed in her home, and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is still looking for her killer.
At about 9 a.m. on March 9, 2008, the Sacramento Metro Fire Department responded to the 7900 block of Archer Avenue in Fair Oaks for a home engulfed in flames.
When they arrived, they spoke to an elderly man who told them he returned home from work to find his house on fire. He attempted to rescue his wife, who he thought was still inside, but was overcome by smoke.
Firefighters put out the fire and found Nichols in the hallway dead. The coroner’s office determined she was shot before the house was set on fire.
“We believe the fire was set just to destroy any evidence that was possibly in the house,” retired Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Michaela Links said.
Detectives believe someone was watching the house hoping to steal items and realized Nichols' husband left. When they went in, they didn’t realize she was still home.
“She may have confronted them and that’s when they killed her,” Links said. “This poor old couple is living their lives, and that somebody would break into their house and result to murder, just for stealing something.”
A lot of the evidence was burned in the fire, making it hard for detectives to solve the case.
“We don’t have the gun that was used,” Links said. “I am sure whoever did this told somebody they did it. If they were breaking into the house to steal to get money for drugs or whatever, I am sure the person that did this told somebody.”
