Seen as controversial, CQPress for the past couple of years has taken violent crime statistic data from various major US cities and ranked the cities by crime rate. The next report comes out in December which will have 2012 data. I thought I should post which cities have the highest crime ranking and which have the lowest. It should be noted, that violent crime is usually concentrated in certain neighborhoods, violent crime can occur anywhere and personal decisions can make you more or less likely to be a victim of violent crime. Those were just some of the criticisms. And before anyone asks, Chicago was not included because the city didn't submit rape statistic data (I think). Also understand that violent crimes officially consist of, murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. Out of 432 cities. This was taken from 2011 FBI crime data. Most Violent Cities1: Camden, New Jersey 2: Detroit, Michigan 3: Flint, Michigan 4: St. Louis, Missouri 5: Oakland, California 6: Cleveland, Ohio 7: Gary, Indiana 8: Birmingham, Alabama 9: New Orleans, Louisiana 10: Newark, New Jersey Least Violent Cities1: Fishers, Indiana 2: Johns Creek, Georgia 3: O'Fallon, Missouri 4: Carmel, Indiana 5: Newton, Massachusetts 6: Mission Viejo, California 7: Ramapo, New York 8: Naperville, Illinois 9: Amherst, New York 10: Irvine, California Thoughts? os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2012/CityCrime2013_CityCrimeRateRankings.pdf

What saddens me is seeing the same cities over and again each year. There is a new Mayor in Detroit who hopefully can turn it around but its sad to see what that city has been through with its bankruptcy and crime. I should add that no matter where you are keeping your wits about you and being aware of your surroundings is always important. New York may be safer than Chicago for example but there are a few neighborhoods I still wouldn't want to be around at 3 am. I vacationed in New Orleans and just stuck to the touristy areas. Although I walked too far down one night and got "what the hell are you doing here?" From a bartender who then told me I was in a dangerous part of town and called a cab for me since it was obvious I was a tourist. But obviously those ten cities can be dangerous. Unfortunately, as AMW proved, crime can happen anywhere.
