Vladimir Balachov is wanted for his role in a brutal double-murder back in 1995. He was first profiled back in 1997.
Balachov and Anatoliy Valenko were Russian immigrants who were living with Fakhat Askarov and his girlfriend, Larisa Jakovleva. Police theorized that Balachov and Valenko were jealous of Askarov's financial status, and had actually questioned several people, including one of Larisa's friends, where he kept his money at. Police believed Fakhat and Larisa walked in on the two trying to break into a locked closet, which started an argument. The argument eventually escalated, and Balachov and Valenko murdered the couple.
Days later, a woman walking her dog on a beach discovered a female leg floating in the water. The next day, a man's head washed ashore. In New Jersey, a man witnessed a car in the woods drop off a suitcase. When he opened it, he discovered two torsos. They quickly determined the two cases were related. The investigators eventually interviewed Fakhat's landlord, who identified the head as Fakhat. They found blood in the apartment, determined Larisa was the female victim, and discovered that the suitcase belonged to Larisa. Investigators also discovered that Balachov and Valenko had purchased a saw with Fakhat's credit card. But the two were long gone. They were profiled multiple times beginning in 1997.
In 2007, Valenko was arrested as a direct result of AMW in the Netherlands. He was capture #968. After first being declared mentally incompetent to stand trial, he was finally put on trial in 2011. I can't find any articles stating the verdict, but according to an inmate search in New York, there's an Anatoliy Valenko serving life w/o parole for two counts of 1st degree murder. So it's safe to say he was convicted. Balachov, however, is still at large.
What do you guys think? I'm guessing they questioned Valenko about his accomplice, but he probably wasn't helpful. My guess is that Balachov also fled to Europe, possibly the Ukraine or the Netherlands as well. He could also be residing in a Russian community in the U.S.

UPDATE from site admin: It has now been five years since theczar's original posting on this case and I have not found any recent articles. As far as I can tell, Balachov is still at large as of this update (7/23/2018), since I haven't found anything online suggesting otherwise. However, as always, if anyone has any updates/proof-of-updates one way or the other, they are always more than welcome to let us know.
