From ABC 6 Columbus:
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Valerie Lackey is putting out an urgent plea for answers in her teen son’s death in March this year.
Eighteen-year-old Tyquan Lackey was killed at a party in Columbus. The person responsible is still free.
"He was the one in the family that kept everybody smiling and now my sunshine is gone," said Tyquan's mother Valerie Lackey, "and I just miss him so much and sometimes I be thinking it is just a dream and I want to wake up so bad."
In early March, Lackey went to a Sweet 16 party in East Columbus. Gun shots rang out. Lackey and two other teens were shot; Lackey didn't make it.
Now, her plea for justice is lining up with new information from police on the case.
The lead detective said they do have a potential suspect, but more people who were at the party need to start talking.
For now, mom tries to move forward
"I sleep in his room now, I took over his room, so I just lay there. I think about him," said his mother.
She remembers her son as a young man who was dedicated to his studies, with plans to become an electrician.
"The kids are saying to me, they would inbox me, ‘we are so proud of your son, if it wouldn't be for him, we wouldn't have got our diploma today,’" said Tyquan's mother.
Unlike those friends, Tyquan's high school diploma wasn't handed out on a graduation stage, but instead at his funeral. His mother has a message for anyone with information.
"It is not being a snitch," said Valerie Lackey, "because you won't speak up it is doing the right thing, live up to Tyquan's name."
Police said Tyquan's death was the 21st homicide in Columbus this year, believing there may have been gang ties to the shooting.
Police said they applaud the efforts this family has taken, and would love to bring them closure.
Investigators have the potential suspect through street rumors and past history with Tyquan.
