Gerald Hemp, a notorious drug trafficker, is wanted for escaping from prison back in 1984.
Hemp first started getting into smuggling drugs into the U.S. shortly after he finished a 5 year sentence for armed robbery. A pilot, as well as an owner of several planes, he would smuggle drugs from Columbia to the United States. Hemp played himself off as a legitimate businessman, giving to several charities. Him and his partner, Charles Leslie Kageler, were also planning on purchasing an airport. At that airport, in 1981, two TBI agents were asked by federal authorities to see if a certain airplane had arrived there. When they arrived, Hemp, Kageler, and two others fled on foot. The plane contained almost 300 kilos of cocaine, the largest cocaine seizure on an aircraft at the time, worth around $200 million. A year later, Kageler was found dead, floating off the coast of South Florida. It was ruled a drowning, but with evidence of foul play.
Hemp was soon arrested, with weapons all over his place. Hemp was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison; he was never charged with Kageler's death. Due to a clerical error; some speculate Hemp was responsible for it, prison officials were led to believe he was serving his four 10 year sentences concurrently. This made him eligible to be transferred to a prison in Florida, and was eventually assigned to a work release program. In 1984, he was given a pass to visit a dentist. After the appointment, he gave the dentist a wad of cash, claiming he wouldn't need a ride, and walked out. He is also suspected in two other murders, one being a doctor who had an affair with the wife of an associate of his.
I have two theories with Hemp. One is that, being in his mid 70s, he retired from the trafficking business a while ago, and is living the good life overseas. He may have moved to South America, and worked from there. The other theory is that he was killed by his associates shortly after his escape. He brought a lot of high profile attention on them, and the fact that he escaped, could be viewed by his associates that he would do anything to avoid serving prison time, maybe even give them up.
Thoughts?
