CHESAPEAKE, Va. - For three years, Melinda Baldwin has been waiting for the phone call from police, telling her that detectives have made an arrest in her son's murder.
She's still waiting.
"Every day we think about him. Every day," Baldwin said.
Police initially responded to the report of a car accident the night of September 30, 2014 in the Western Branch area. Once on scene, they found the car had crashed into a tree. Inside the car, it was clear the driver had been shot. "I was just torn apart as soon as I got there," Baldwin said. "I knew something was wrong. It was bad."
Trevor was just 20 years old when he died. He and his older brother grew up on the Outer Banks, but moved to Suffolk with his family after he graduated from First Flight High School . "His smile would just light up a room," his mom remembered.
Melinda says she told Trevor he needed to be home by 10 p.m. the night he died. She says he went to a friend's house that night and then a pickup game of kickball. "I noticed it was 9:30, 10. I started texting him and there was no response," she said.
Not long after, she got a call and rushed to the scene. "It was devastating to arrive on sight and get that news. There were a lot of people around," she said.
She hoped for a quick arrest, but that didn't happen. Now, the case is listed among the police department's cold cases. "What in the world are these people still doing on the street? You shot and murdered my son. Why are you still you there? Why?"
The family has even offered an $8,000 reward for information leading to arrest, but the reward remains unclaimed. "I truly believe, and God knows I hope it comes in the near future, that there is an arrest made," she said. "We need some justice."
Police ask anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
