The Unknown Matt Novak killer (or in this case, likely killers) was aired last year on AMW on Lifetime. The following is a new article about the case:
HARRISON TWP. — Every time Matt Novak sees a mugshot on TV, he can’t help thinking that might be one of them.
One of the three men who drove off five years ago and left his son bleeding on a Philadelphia street after shooting the 24-year-old in the leg.
Matthew B. Novak died from the gunshots Sept. 28, 2008. The three men sought in connection with the shooting haven’t been found.
Yet, after five years, the father is no less determined to find the culprits than he was when the tears first dried.
A reward of more than $40,000 is offered for information leading to the conviction of whoever is responsible, but there hasn’t been a break in the case.
Meanwhile, Novak is still haunted by the elusiveness of his son’s killers.
The younger Novak was attending Philly’s Puerto Rican Day Parade with friends that day. The group grabbed a few drinks on Columbus Boulevard, his father told the Times about a week after the killing.
Afterward, the car in which they traveled broke down at 6th and Green streets. Novak tried to flag motorists down, hoping someone had jumper cables.
He’d soon get into a passing car and never return. Police found Novak lying at 13th Street and Fairmount Avenue a little after 7 p.m. He’d been shot several times in the leg. He died a few hours later at Hahnemann University Hospital.
The elder Novak still stresses what little information investigators have. The culprits — described as three black males — left in a 2006 to 2008 electric blue Chevy Impala.
The video in which the car is seen shows it had New Jersey plates. What isn’t clear is the license plate number.
“It’s not like on TV, where they can push a button, and it clears the picture up ... and you have the number within an hour,” Novak explained.
The young man’s story was featured last year on "America’s Most Wanted." A Facebook page, www.facebook.com/whokilledmattnovak, touts photos of the suspect vehicle and the reward money in hopes that someone, at some point, will give authorities something.
A video showing the vehicle just before and after Novak entered it can be seen on YouTube. Anyone can leave an anonymous tip by calling 215-546-TIPS or 215-686-TIPS.
In the meantime, Novak and his family hold out hope for answers.
“It gets harder and harder as the years go on,” Novak said. “The biggest thing for us is we haven’t been able to get that license plate number.”
