VERO BEACH, Fla. —
A reward has been increased to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest of a driver accused in a fatal hit-and-run, according to Vero Beach police.
Investigators said a driver hit and killed Valerie Jean Waters, 52, while she was riding her bike along Old Dixie Highway near Crestlawn Cemetery on Dec. 22.
The driver fled from the crash scene, leaving Waters on the side of the road.
"We don't know how long she laid there, if she was even aware of what happened, if she laid there calling for help," said Nicole Sammons, the victim's daughter.
Waters was rushed to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and was in a coma for nearly a week before she died.
Waters left behind three children and nine grandchildren.
The vehicle involved in the crash is believed to have heavy front-end damage and a broken headlight, but there is no further description at this time, police said.
Without many leads, police and Waters' family members are asking the public to come forward with information to help identify the driver.
"It might have been an accident, but if you would have stopped, she might still be here today," Sammons said. "Now, we have to live without her. Her grandchildren cry every single day."
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vero Beach Police Department at 772-978-4600 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 800-273-TIPS.
Much of the money for the reward was taken from a GoFundMe account created in Waters' name.
Sammons said she hoped the extra money in the reward will lead to the arrest of whoever killed her mother.
"It's time for them to come forward so our family can have some sort of peace," she said.
