LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Family members have identified a teenager who was shot in the head Tuesday near Algonquin Parkway and later died.
Derrick Cargill, 18, had just graduated from Iroquois High School when he was shot at Lincoln and Colorado avenues around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Cargill's parents are too upset to talk right now but asked community activist Christopher 2X to give WLKY information.
He said Cargill's parents told him their son was celebrating graduation and the holiday weekend with friends when the shooting happened.
He was rushed to University Hospital and put on a ventilator in ICU.
It was around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when doctors told his parents he was not going to make it.
“Upon hearing that news, the mother collapsed. Because family members describe the joy that she was feeling with his graduation throughout Memorial Day weekend and now to hear that she he lost her everything, as they described him,” 2X said.
He said Cargill's family members have many unanswered questions about their loved one's death, including if he knew his killer.
"There's rumors running rampant all over the place. Maybe a jealousy issue. Maybe this, maybe that. Who knows?" 2X said.
Cargill is the latest victim of an uptick of violence plaguing the city of Louisville.
"(His family) have never thought that they were immune from these violent acts, because they live in challenging neighborhoods. However, the joy was that he wasn't a part of this crap, and there was a lot of hope there, a lot of hopeful signs that he would never be a part of this," 2X said.
Louisville's recent rise in shootings and homicides include a surprising number of teenage suspects and victims.
"I mean, already within the first five months of this year, we almost have had 200 individuals that have been hit by gunfire and well over 40 criminal homicides," 2X said.
The biggest question for Cargill's family members at the moment is who killed him, and why isn't anyone coming forward?
"They're convinced that somebody that was around him, they know, they probably know who were either one, two, or several individuals that might have took his life," 2X said.
Cargill was enrolled at Indiana University Southeast, where he planned to study sports medicine.
WLKY is told some of his organs will be donated.
No one has been arrested in this case.
Police have not identified a suspect.
Anyone with information is asked to call 502-574-LMPD.

Thoughts? One year later and sadly Derek's case is still listed as an unsolved homicide on the Louisville P.D. website. There was also a one year anniversary and no one has yet to come forward despite Derek's family offering a $10,000 reward.
