From WFMY North Carolina:
WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- New information on a deadly shooting in Winston-Salem is providing new hope for a grieving family --- desperate for answers.
Winston-Salem Police are asking for help from the public to find the person responsible for the unsolved murder of 19-year-old LaDawn Morgan.
Morgan was killed and a 79-year-old man was shot in the face on Rich avenue, in March.
On Wednesday, police announced they have identified a person in the homicide and they believe he's currently in the Winston-Salem area.
Now, Morgan’s family is begging for someone to come forward to help them find closure.
“Justice is what we are seeking,” said Michael Warren, the victim’s uncle. “Until you seek it and can't find it, sometimes you don't know what it means,” said Warren. “But that's what we're looking for. Not revenge, for that is of the Lord. But justice.”
Police say Morgan was an innocent victim, caught in the crossfire of a fight that she wasn't even involved with.
“She was an innocent victim who had her whole life ahead of her,” said Detective Michael Ognosky. “She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Ognosky says Morgan’s homicide was the result of an on-going dispute between two different groups of people.
On Monday March 26, police say one group was in the front yard/porch area of a house in the 900 block of Rich Avenue.
Another group arrived in several vehicles and gunshots were exchanged between at least one member from each group, according to police.
Police say several houses and multiple cars were hit with gunfire.
One bullet struck 79-year-old Alexander Barber Jr. in his face. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.
Morgan was struck in her abdomen and did not survive.
Now almost 3 months later, and no arrests, Morgan’s family wants justice.
“Until you seek it and can't find it, sometimes you don't know what it means. But that's what we're looking for,” said Warren. “Not revenge, for that is of the Lord. But justice.”
Through witness interviews, authorities have identified a person of interest in the case.
Police are looking for a male with his hair styled in dreadlocks that go below his shoulders.
After the shooting, police say the person of interest fled North Carolina but recently received information indicates that person is now back in Winston-Salem.
Police Chief Barry Rountree says attempts are underway to locate and interview the person of interest but they need more help from the community to solve the case.
“Somebody has some information,” said Rountree. “Think about if it was your family.”
Morgan's family wants justice for Ladawn and for everything she'll miss out on in life.
“She never got to experience her first car. Remember your first car? Everybody does. She never got to experience that,” said Warren. “Moving out of the house, maybe getting your first home, have kids, raise a family. It was taken from her. We need justice for Ladawn.”
Individuals from both groups involved in the gunfight have been interviewed and police say additional individuals from each group are being sought for interviews.
Police hope digital evidence should be received in the near future.
