From the Miami Herald website (miamiherald.com):
Christina Kur called her mom and said she was on her way over to spend time with her 2-year-old daughter. The child lived with Kur’s mother and father in their Aventura home.
She never made it. A short time after the phone call, a bullet took the 25-year-old’s life as she sat in the passenger seat of a friend’s car in the parking lot of a North Miami Beach apartment complex. That was more than five months ago.
On Thursday, Kur’s still-shellshocked parents made a public plea for help in finding their daughter’s killer.
“She wanted to teach young children. But her dream was terminated,” Kur’s mother Anastasia Arfi said. “She was my only child. My hope. My dream.”
The Nov. 13 homicide didn’t generate much of a buzz. It happened on a Sunday afternoon just before Thanksgiving in a neighborhood that has its share of crime. A month earlier Kur was arrested by Miami-Dade police on prostitution charges. Although she was arrested, she was not convicted of the crime.
Police said Kevin Rodriguez-Abreu, 20, who was driving the bullet-riddled car in which Kur was killed, was cooperative. A surveillance video that captured the vehicle believed to have been the shooter’s leaving the apartment, didn’t offer much information.
“As far as [Kur and Rodriguez-Abreu’s] personal relationship, we don’t know more than they were friends. Kevin has fully cooperated. But we’re unaware of an actual motive,” Miami-Dade police Detective Jennifer Capote said.
The shooting that ended Kur’s life happened at 2:59 p.m. Nov. 13 in the west parking lot at the Colonial Sunset Apartments at Northwest 170th Street and Ninth Avenue. Rodriguez-Abreu and his mother Martha Abreu lived there. Kur lived part-time with her parents in Aventura. On Thursday, police and her parents wouldn’t say where she lived when she wasn’t home. The day she died, according to the incident report from the shooting, Kur and Rodriguez-Abreu had just returned from eating Chinese food for lunch.
The redacted incident report says an unknown black car pulled up next to Rodriguez-Abreu’s 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, rolled down the window and someone inside began firing a weapon. Rodriguez-Abreu said he ducked when he heard the gunfire, then looked over and saw that Kur had been shot in the head. The passenger-side rear window of the Jetta was blown out and bullet holes were found in the front and rear passenger doors.
Almost five months after the shooting, police say they still don’t know if Kur was the intended target or if her friend’s vehicle was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
On Thursday, Kur’s parents, Anastasia and Albert Arfi, sat before a group of media in a small room on the first floor of the Miami-Dade police headquarters in Doral and with emotions flaring, asked for any single morsel of information that might help solve the crime. Anastasia Arfi said her daughter was taking online classes and that her ultimate goal was to work with children.
“She was a wonderful mother and a wonderful daughter,” she said. “Can you imagine just for a second this nightmare that we’re going through? There are no words to describe the pain. Please help us to bring justice for my daughter.
