From wncn.com (CBS North Carolina):
On the NBC show “The Blacklist,” Raymond Reddington helps the FBI track down ruthless criminals who have eluded capture for years.
In real life, local agencies like the Raleigh Police Department also pursue criminals on the run – but catching the bad guys isn’t always an easy process.
For example, one case that remains open dates from nearly seven years ago. On Aug. 30, 2008, Roberto Torres-Cruz was shot and killed on Woodpecker Court. He was 21 years old.
Sgt. Kevin Lillis of the Raleigh Police said, “Information was gathered that the suspects had fled the scene.”
A truck was located in front of a rental apartment just two streets away from the murder scene. Police said the driver of the truck was Raul Zamora-Marcial, and witnesses placed him at the murder scene along with his brother, Reynaldo. Police say Reynaldo Zamora-Marcial fired the fatal shots.
Hours after the shooting, police obtained a search warrant for the apartment where Raul Zamora-Marcial lived. They next day, they obtained a warrant for his brother’s apartment on Fountain Drive. There, they kicked in the door looking for him as well as evidence.
“It turned out the suspects had left the area,” Lillis said.
The brothers are Mexican nationals, and detectives say they were on the run. They say Reynaldo Zamora-Marcial may have changed his appearance.
“It’s tough enough finding someone hiding in your own city,” Lillis said. “Now when you’re talking about another country that increases the level of difficulty.”
Slowly, the case grew cold, and things changed in the neighborhood where it happened. The neighborhood is full of renters, and in the years since the murder, many people have moved in and out. So few in the area recall what happened.
In a television show like “The Blacklist,” the cases come together in an orderly fashion in the search for suspects. It’s more problematic in real life.
“They are very difficult because of the time factor with evidence getting further away from the crime – further out of people’s minds,” Lillis said. “People move that were related to the crime, knew the crime.”
The murder was big news when it happened, but dropped off the media’s radar.
But detectives are still pushing ahead on the case.
“We follow up monthly,” Lillis said. “We hold a smaller squad-type meeting to see what the status of the cases are. There’s not always information every month — but we keep in touch with the task force officers. We check crime-stoppers to see if calls came in.”
They also work with U.S. marshals.
“We don’t have the resources within the police department to travel to other countries to look for them so we highly rely on the federal agencies to assist with that,” Lillis said.
As investigators keep this cold case from freezing, they wait for the day when they can tell the victim’s family an arrest has been made.
In the meantime, they want the suspects to know they haven’t forgotten them.
“They know they are being looked for,” Lillis said. “So I think they’re always looking over the shoulder not knowing when someone’s going to catch up with them.”

Thoughts? I wish there was a little more information such as an alleged motive in this case, but still nice to see a local news channel highlighting it even six years.
