From Fox Indianapolis (fox59.com):
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – An accused killer wanted for a deadly shooting that took place almost 17 years ago remains on the run from police.
Investigators say Hector Perez pulled the trigger and killed the 25-year-old victim in cold blood in February 2000 on West Washington Street. The victim was shot four times in the back, authorities said.
It only took police a few hours to figure out who committed the killing, but almost two decades later, the suspect has still never been put in cuffs for the crime.
A lot has changed in the area where the murder occurred. The shooting took place in the doorway of a record store. That business has since disappeared and replaced by an AutoZone.
Several witnesses, who heard the gunshots and saw the suspect drive away, worked in a business across the street. That store has also closed down.
“A guy like this obviously has been hiding for a long time,” said Sgt. Steve DuBois with Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
Sgt. DuBois doesn’t know if Perez is still in Indiana because the suspect vanished without ever being arrested for the killing.
“We found in the past sometimes they leave, but other times they come back and are right under our noses and nobody knows,” said DuBois.
According to court records, Perez killed the victim over a $16,000 drug debt. The court papers explain that Perez borrowed the getaway car from a friend who witnessed the murder and later identified Perez as the gunman.
While Perez’s whereabouts remain a mystery, Sgt. DuBois says it’s important the case not be forgotten.
“If we just forgot him and put the file away, then he would have won,” said DuBois.
Despite the fact that it’s been nearly two decades, there is obviously no limit on prosecuting the suspect for murder.
Anyone with information on the Perez’s location is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
