www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2013/07/25/canada-crime-rate-lowest-decades.htmlI've been posting alot over the past little while regarding how crime rates are at record lows, despite public opinion to the contrary. According to CBC (A Canadian news channel), police-reported crime rates up here are the lowest since 1972. What's even better is that violent crimes never even peaked in the early 1990s unlike property crimes, property crimes by the way have come down from 6,000 per 100,000 population in 1991 to nearly 2,000 in 2012. The severity of crimes was even down 3 percent from 2011 to 2012. The ironic thing is that our Conservative government have introduced numerous anti-crime bills even though they aren't needed, it's just that Canadians like Americans are paranoid because of increased crime-reporting in the media. Hopefully the trend continues.

That's great news. I wish the U.S. would take a look at Canada and see what they're doing right. While New York City is dealing with record-low crime numbers, Chicago and some other big and smaller cities aren't doing as well.

Canada had only 543 homicides in 2012, down 55 from the previous year. The homicide rate here is the lowest since 1966. Also the rate of stranger homicides is the lowest in more than 40 years. Among solved homicides in 2012, 84% of the victims were killed by an acquaintance or family member. The youth homicide rate also dropped in 2012 to the lowest in over a decade. ca.news.yahoo.com/homicide-numbers-rates-down-across-canada-2012-statscan-192032952.html

One does have to wonder what Canada does so right compared to what America does so wrong. The documentary "Bowling For Columbine" mentions Canada has the same easy access to guns, same violent movies and video games, yet much less crime despite being the U.S.'s upstairs neighbor. According to the movie, some people who live in Canada even leave their doors open during the day.
One thing the documentary pointed out is perhaps part of this is due to Canada not sensationalizing their news. The U.S.'s headlines are always about who was murdered and always features a news expose on what everyday thing in your household can kill you. In the movie, the top story on the Canadian news was "new speed bumbps!"
I know the movie is now over a decade old but I take it some of it still rings true.

For Bowling For Columbine to get the rave reviews that it did, it met the prerequisite of actually MAKING SENSE! I take it you must've been thrilled that Bowling For Columbine was ranked 4th on my list of the Top 40 Films of '002?

Michael Moore can sometimes get way too liberal (I am middle of the road in my political beliefs and don't like it when either side gets too extreme, be it to the left or right) but Bowling For Columbine hit the nail on the head and summed everything up so perfectly.
